Chapter 5 - The Glass Penthouse

The penthouse apartment belonging to Doña Eleanor sat on the top floor of a high-rise luxury building overlooking the harbor. Rain slammed against the floor-to-ceiling glass walls, matching the dark, chaotic storm inside.

Inside the living room, the furniture was overturned. Expensive crystal vases lay shattered across the hardwood floor.

Eleanor sat tied to a wooden dining chair, her face bruised, weeping hysterically. Standing behind her, her knuckles white around a silver snub-nosed revolver, was Victoria Vance. She wore a rain-soaked trench coat, her makeup smeared across her pale face, looking entirely unhinged.

The heavy double doors of the penthouse clicked open.

Julian walked in first, his hands raised at shoulder height, his body tense as a coiled spring. Stepping in right behind him was Hannah.

"Stay back!" Victoria screamed, pointing the gun wildly between Julian and Hannah. "I told you to come alone, servant!"

"I am here, Victoria," Hannah said, her voice amazingly steady despite the trembling of her hands. She stepped forward, placing herself slightly in front of Julian to draw Victoria's focus. "Put the gun down. This won't bring back your engagement. It won't bring back your family's money."

"Shut up!" Victoria shrieked, her eyes wild with psychotic rage. "You ruined everything! I spent four years raising that spoiled little brat! I spent four years pretending to care about this pathetic old woman! I was supposed to be the queen of the Sterling Empire!"

"You were never a mother to Toby!" Hannah countered fiercely, taking another cautious step forward. "You locked him in closets! You left him with nannies while you spent Julian’s money on jewels and trips! You didn't want a family, Victoria... you wanted a trophy!"

Eleanor raised her bruised face, looking at Hannah through tears of pure shame. "Hannah... I'm sorry... my God, I'm so sorry..."

"Shut up, old woman!" Victoria roared, turning the barrel of the gun directly toward Eleanor’s head!

"Victoria, NO!" Julian bellowed, lunging forward.

BANG!

A deafening gunshot shattered the air inside the apartment.

Eleanor screamed. But the bullet didn't hit her.

In that split second of distraction as Victoria turned the gun, Hannah had sprinted forward with reckless courage, throwing her entire weight into Victoria’s side!

The gun fired harmlessly into the ceiling, sending plaster dust raining down.

Both women crashed violently onto the hardwood floor. Victoria snarled like a wild animal, using the heavy metal handle of the revolver to strike Hannah across the temple!

Warm blood bloomed along Hannah’s hairline, but she refused to let go, pinning Victoria’s gun wrist to the floor with all her strength.

"Get off me, you miserable maid!" Victoria screamed, raising her other hand to claw at Hannah’s eyes.

Before her fingers could touch Hannah’s face, a heavy hand grabbed Victoria’s throat, lifting her bodily off the floor and slamming her against the marble pillar!

Julian stood over her, his eyes dark with pure, demonic fury. He squeezed her wrist until the revolver clattered onto the floor, kicking it away across the room.

"Touch my wife again," Julian growled, his voice a low, terrifying rumble that made Victoria freeze in horror, "and I will tear your world apart."

From the open doorway, four armed tactical police officers rushed in, led by Gabriel Vance.

"Police! Don't move!" Gabriel yelled, his weapon raised.

Within seconds, two officers pinned Victoria to the floor, snapping heavy metal handcuffs onto her wrists. As she was dragged away, screaming curses into the rainy night, Gabriel rushed over to untie Eleanor, while Julian dropped onto his knees beside Hannah.

He pulled her up into his lap, his hands trembling as he used his silk handkerchief to press against the bleeding cut on her head.

"Hannah... oh God, Hannah..." Julian choked out, tears finally spilling down his cheeks as he held her close against his chest. "Why did you do that?! She could have killed you!"

Hannah rested her head against his shoulder, a weak but triumphant smile playing on her lips. "I told you, Julian... no one is ever breaking our family again."

Eleanor, freed from her ropes, stumbled over to where they sat on the floor. She dropped onto her knees, weeping bitterly, her hands trembling as she reached out toward Hannah.

"Hannah..." Eleanor wept, her voice broken by profound remorse. "Can you... can you ever forgive a foolish, arrogant old woman who almost destroyed her own son's soul?"

May you like

Hannah looked at the broken mother-in-law who had once treated her like dirt. She took a deep breath, reaching out to gently touch Eleanor’s trembling hand.

"For Toby's sake, Eleanor," Hannah whispered softly. "We will learn to heal."
