Chapter 4 - The Shadows of Revenge

Victoria Vance didn't leave quietly.

As she was escorted out of the Sterling Tower by four private security officers, she screamed threats into the gathered crowd of reporters, her face contorted in psychotic rage. By noon, news of her removal from the merger had sent the Vance Corporation's stock into an absolute freefall.

Inside the quiet sanctuary of the Sterling Estate, the atmosphere was vastly different.

The grand living room, once cold and decorated in Victoria’s minimalist taste, was beginning to feel like a home again. Toby sat on a plush velvet rug near the fireplace, laughing happily as Hannah helped him assemble a massive wooden train track.

Julian stood near the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, holding two cups of warm chamomile tea. He watched Hannah—the soft way she smiled at Toby, the gentle patience in her voice—and felt a warmth in his chest that he hadn't experienced in four long years.

He walked over, kneeling on the rug beside her, and handed her one of the cups.

"Thank you," Hannah whispered, looking up at him with a soft smile.

"For what?" Julian asked gently, reaching out to tuck a strand of hair behind her ear.

"For believing me," she said, her eyes glistening. "When I stepped into that ballroom yesterday... I was terrified you would look at me like a crazy woman, that you would let security throw me out."

"I would have recognized you anywhere, Hannah," Julian said, his voice thick with emotion. "Even if my eyes were blind, my heart knew who you were the second you walked into the room."

Toby suddenly looked up from his train set, his big brown eyes darting between his parents. "Are you going to stay forever now, Mommy? Will you go away if I fall asleep?"

Hannah dropped her tea cup onto the side table and immediately gathered Toby into her lap, pressing a deep kiss onto his forehead. "I am never, ever leaving you again, my sweet boy. Not for a single second."

Before Julian could speak, his private phone rang loudly. He pulled it from his pocket, frowning at the unfamiliar number.

He answered, placing it on speaker so Hannah could hear. "Julian Sterling."

"Julian..." a weak, rasping voice came through the speaker. It was his mother, Eleanor. She sounded broken, her breath ragged.

"Mother," Julian said coldly. "I told you not to call this number."

"Julian... please... you have to help me!" Eleanor sobbed, genuine terror in her voice. "Victoria... she came to my private apartment! She has a gun, Julian! She’s crazy! She says if she can't have the Sterling fortune, no one will!"

CRASH!

A loud sound of breaking glass echoed through the phone speaker, followed by Eleanor’s ear-piercing shriek!

"Julian!" Victoria’s unhinged voice suddenly took over the line. "Tell your little maid to come to your mother's penthouse in twenty minutes! Alone! If she doesn't come... or if you bring the police... I’ll put a bullet through your mother’s head!"

The line went dead.

Hannah gasped, her hands flying to her mouth. Toby whined, sensing his mother's sudden terror.

Julian stood up instantly, his face turning entirely pale, his eyes flashing with lethal fury. "She’s completely lost her mind."

"Julian, we have to call Gabriel!" Hannah cried out, standing up and holding Toby close. "We can't let her hurt Eleanor, no matter what she did to us!"

Julian looked at his wife, awe washing over him. After everything Eleanor had done—the four years of torture, the stolen child, the erased life—Hannah still couldn't stand by and let the old woman die.

"I won't let you go in there alone, Hannah," Julian said firmly, pulling his tactical security team's private line on his phone. "We go together. And this time... Victoria Vance never gets out."
