Chapter 3 - The Boardroom War

By eight o'clock the following morning, the Sterling financial scandal was the top story on every major news network across the country. Stock prices for Sterling Enterprises had plunged by fifteen percent in pre-market trading, and the board of directors had called an emergency meeting at the corporate headquarters downtown.

In the executive penthouse suite of the Sterling Tower, the atmosphere was lethal.

Eleanor Sterling sat at the head of the long glass conference table, flanked by three senior board members and two high-powered corporate lawyers. Across from her sat Victoria Vance, dressed in a sharp, tailored black suit, her eyes red-rimmed from a night of furious scheming.

"He won't show up," Victoria hissed, tapping her manicured nails impatiently against her leather folder. "Julian has completely lost his mind over that servant girl. We need to vote him out right now, declare him mentally unfit, and appoint an interim CEO before the market opens!"

"Be quiet, Victoria," Eleanor snapped, wiping her forehead with a lace handkerchief. "Julian is my son. He knows the rules of this company. If he doesn't show up to defend his position, the board will automatically strip him of his voting rights."

"Then let's vote!" Victoria demanded, looking around at the board members. "My father's firm still holds twenty percent of the debt notes! If you don't remove Julian today, we will call in those notes immediately!"

"Is that a threat, Miss Vance?" a quiet, iron-cold voice spoke from the doorway.

The heavy frosted-glass doors slid open.

Julian walked into the boardroom. He wore a perfectly tailored charcoal three-piece suit, his hair combed back, his presence so commanding that several board members instinctively stood up.

Walking right beside him was Gabriel Vance, carrying two thick leather briefcases. And behind them, dressed in a simple, elegant dark-green wool dress that highlighted her regal posture, was Hannah.

Eleanor gasped, standing up so fast her leather chair rolled back into the wall. "Julian! How dare you bring that woman into this boardroom?! This is a confidential corporate proceeding!"

"She has every right to be here, Eleanor," Gabriel said smoothly, setting his briefcases onto the table with a heavy THUD. "In fact, Mrs. Hannah Sterling holds more right to be in this room than anyone else present."

Victoria sneered, leaning back in her chair. "She's a nameless orphan with no background! She doesn't own a single share of Sterling stock!"

"She didn't four years ago," Gabriel corrected, opening the first briefcase and pulling out a stack of yellowed, notarized documents. "However, before Julian’s father passed away six years ago, he established a private family trust—The Arthur Sterling Legacy Fund. Under the terms of that trust, thirty percent of the company's voting stock was set aside for Julian's firstborn child... to be managed exclusively by the child's birth mother until the boy turns twenty-one."

The entire room fell silent. Eleanor’s face turned completely gray.

"That's impossible..." Eleanor whispered, her hand clutching her chest. "Arthur never told me about that trust!"

"Because my father knew what kind of woman you were, Mother," Julian said coldly, taking a seat at the table and motioning for Hannah to sit beside him. "He knew you would stop at nothing to control this company, even if it meant destroying your own family."

Gabriel slammed the documents onto the center of the table. "As the legal birth mother of Toby Sterling, Hannah Sterling hereby assumes full control of thirty percent of the voting stock. Combined with Julian’s thirty-five percent, they hold a sixty-five percent absolute majority."

Victoria stood up, her voice cracking into a desperate scream. "This is fraud! The marriage was annulled when she was declared dead!"

"An annulment based on a fraudulent death certificate is legally void from its inception, Miss Vance," Gabriel replied with a terrifying smile. "Which means your engagement to Julian was null, your financial agreements are invalid, and your father's firm has zero leverage."

Julian leaned forward, resting his forearms on the glass table. His eyes locked onto Victoria, then shifted to his mother.

"Motion number one for today's emergency meeting," Julian announced, his voice echoing with absolute authority. "The immediate and permanent removal of Doña Eleanor Sterling from the board of directors, along with the termination of all corporate credit accounts associated with her name."

"Julian!" Eleanor shrieked, tears finally bursting from her eyes. "I am your mother! I raised you!"

"You stole four years of my wife's life, Mother," Julian said, his eyes devoid of any warmth. "You made my son call a stranger 'mommy' while his real mother worked night shifts to buy him food. You are lucky I am only taking your board seat and not sending you to a federal prison alongside Victoria."

Julian turned to the three senior board members, who were already bowing their heads in agreement. "All those in favor?"

Every single board member slowly raised their hands.

"Motion passed," Julian said softly. He looked at Victoria, whose hands were shaking uncontrollably. "Security is waiting downstairs to escort you off the premises, Victoria. And if you ever come within one hundred yards of my son or my wife again... I will personally make sure your family's firm is liquidated by Friday."
