Chapter 2 - The House of Lies

The ballroom descended into utter chaos. Reporters from major financial and society magazines began flashing their cameras frantically, capturing the image of Victoria Vance screaming at security guards while Eleanor Sterling was helped into a chair by trembling waiters.
Julian didn't look at the cameras. He didn't look at his mother, nor his frantic bride. Step by step, as if moving through a dream, he walked toward Hannah.
Toby remained wrapped around Hannah’s neck, his crying subsiding into soft, rhythmic hiccups now that he was safely in her arms. Hannah kept her chin high, refusing to lower her gaze as Julian stopped right in front of her.
"They told me you died of heart failure during childbirth," Julian rasped, his voice trembling as he reached out a shaky hand toward her face. His fingers hesitated just millimeters from her cheek, terrified that she might turn into dust if he touched her. "I held a empty casket, Hannah. I buried you. I spent four years drinking myself to sleep because I thought I failed you..."
"You didn't fail me, Julian," Hannah said softly, her voice laced with a painful mix of sorrow and lingering love. "You were just blind. You trusted the people who claimed to love you, and you never looked close enough to see the cage they built around you."
"Hannah..." Julian choked out, a single tear slipping down his cheek.
Before he could touch her, Victoria rushed forward, grabbing Julian’s arm with frantic strength. Her veil was torn, her expensive hair styling undone, and her eyes wild with desperation.
"Julian! Look at me!" Victoria shrieked, pulling at his tuxedo jacket. "She’s an impostor! Gabriel fabricated those documents to destroy the merger! If you walk away from this altar today, the Vance Corporation will pull all funding from your shipping lines! You’ll be bankrupt by morning!"
Julian turned his head slowly. The grief on his face vanished, replaced by an expression of pure, unadulterated disgust that made Victoria freeze in her tracks.
He reached down and unpinned the white rose boutonnieres from his lapel, dropping it onto the floor right at Victoria’s feet.
"Let it burn," Julian said quietly.
He looked back at Hannah, taking Toby from her tired arms and settling the little boy securely against his broad shoulder. Toby immediately laid his head on Julian’s neck, reaching out one tiny hand to keep a firm grip on Hannah’s maid collar, ensuring she wouldn't disappear again.
"Julian, no!" Eleanor screamed from her chair, her voice hoarse. "You cannot do this to this family! Think of your status! Think of the board of directors!"
"The board can find a new CEO, Mother," Julian snapped, his voice echoing across the silent hall. "Because as of this second, I am taking my wife and my son home."
Julian reached out with his free hand, wrapping his strong fingers around Hannah’s hand, pulling her close to his side. Together, framed by the flashing camera lights and the stunned stares of the city's elite, they walked down the long red carpet, stepping out of the ballroom and leaving the ruins of a billionaire's wedding behind them.
An hour later, a sleek black SUV pulled into the private gates of the Sterling Estate in the Lomas hills. Rain had begun to fall, heavy drops drumming against the tinted glass windows.
Inside the vehicle, no one spoke. Toby had fallen fast asleep in the back seat, his small fingers still curled tightly around a soft toy dog Julian had kept in the car for years.
Julian parked the car in front of the grand stone entrance. He turned off the engine, but he didn't make a move to get out. He turned in his seat, staring at Hannah in the dim dashboard light.
She was still wearing the navy maid uniform, a plain woolen jacket thrown over her shoulders. She looked exhausted, pale, but her eyes held a quiet resilience that four years of suffering had failed to extinguish.
"Where were you?" Julian asked softly, his voice thick with raw emotion. "All those years... where were you, Hannah?"
Hannah looked out the window at the grand house where she had once lived as the mistress of the estate. "For two years, I was locked in a private psychiatric ward in the northern province. They kept me heavily sedated, telling the staff I was a delusional woman who believed she was married to a billionaire."
Julian’s knuckles turned white as he gripped the steering wheel so hard the leather groaned. "My mother..."
"Your mother paid the facility director ten thousand dollars a month to keep me there," Hannah continued, her tone eerily calm. "When the facility went bankrupt two years ago during the medical audit, I was transferred to a public shelter. I lost my memory for a long time because of the drugs they forced on me. It only came back six months ago... when I saw your face on a billboard announcing your engagement to Victoria."
Julian covered his face with his hands, a raspy, painful sob escaping his chest. "My God... what did they do to you? What did I let them do to you?"
"I didn't come back to punish you, Julian," Hannah said, reaching out to gently place her hand over his trembling wrist. "I came back because Gabriel found me three weeks ago. He told me Toby was crying every night, that Victoria was abusing him when you weren't looking. I didn't care about the money or the mansion. I worked as a temp hotel maid just to get through those security gates today to save my son."

Julian raised his head, his gray eyes burning with a dark, dangerous determination. He reached across the console, pulling Hannah toward him until her forehead rested against his.
"You saved him, Hannah," Julian whispered against her skin. "Now... let me destroy everyone who hurt you."
