Chapter 4 - Playing with Fire

The air in the command center of Vance Tower was thick with tension. Computer screens flickered with digital maps, financial transactions, and satellite feeds as Gabriel’s team worked frantically to trace Richard Montgomery’s call.
"We traced the signal to an abandoned cold-storage warehouse in the industrial district near the docks," Gabriel said, zooming in on a blueprint of the facility. "Richard has at least eight armed men inside. He’s using his sister, Catherine, and Julian as shields so we can't just send in the local authorities without triggering a massive media disaster."
"He thinks I'm going to panic," Maya said, staring at the screen with cold determination. "He thinks because I'm twenty-four and just stepped into power, I'll pay him off to protect my father's memory."
"Are you going to pay?" Gabriel asked, turning to her.
"No," Maya said firmly. "If you feed a wolf, it just comes back hungrier. We strike back. Hard."
"Lady Maya, it's too dangerous for you to go near that warehouse," Gabriel insisted, stepping directly into her path. "Let my team handle this. I will retrieve the hard drives containing the fake footage and neutralize Richard."
Maya looked up at Gabriel, her eyes flashing with defiance. "My father’s honor is at stake, Gabriel. Richard wants a confrontation with the Vance heiress. I'm going to give him one. But we do it on my terms."
She reached out, gently touching the sleeve of Gabriel's jacket. "And I know you won't let anything happen to me."
Gabriel looked down at her hand on his arm, his jaw clenching as he fought back the wave of affection crashing over him. "I would burn this city to the ground before I let anyone lay a finger on you, Maya."
Two hours later.
A single black SUV pulled up to the rusted gates of the cold-storage warehouse. Rain was pouring down in sheets, bouncing off the metal roof like gunfire.
Maya stepped out of the vehicle holding a black umbrella, her heels clicking against the wet concrete. She wore a dark leather jacket over her suit, looking entirely unbothered by the bleak surroundings. Gabriel walked half a step behind her, his hand resting beneath his coat where his sidearm was holstered.
Inside the warehouse, the air was freezing, smelling of rust and damp earth.
In the center of the vast space, Catherine and Julian were tied to metal chairs under a single swinging light bulb. Catherine was bruised, her expensive makeup smeared, crying hysterically. Julian looked broken, his fine suit torn and dirty.
Standing beside them was Richard Montgomery, holding a heavy suppressed pistol, flanked by six armed mercenaries.
"You actually came," Richard grinned, throwing his cigarette onto the floor and crushing it beneath his boot. "And you brought your little bodyguard. Bold move, princess."
"Where are the drives, Richard?" Maya asked calmly, stopping ten paces away.
"First, the transfer," Richard said, waving his gun toward a laptop sitting on a wooden crate. "Twenty million dollars. Plus the signed release forms for the Montgomery shipping assets."
Julian raised his head, his eyes swelling with desperate hope. "Maya! Please! Transfer the money! He’s crazy! He’s going to shoot us!"
Maya didn't even glance at Julian. "Richard, do you really think you're the only one who knows how to run an intelligence operation?"
Richard’s grin faltered slightly. "What are you talking about?"
Gabriel pulled a small remote device from his pocket and pressed a red button.
Suddenly, every floodlight in the ceiling of the warehouse burst into blinding white light. The heavy corrugated doors at the back of the building blew inward with a deafening CRASH, as armored tactical vehicles rammed straight through the walls, trapping Richard’s men in a circle of steel.
Red laser sights danced across Richard’s chest and the foreheads of his mercenaries.
"What the hell?!" Richard gasped, backing away as his men instinctively dropped their weapons, raising their hands in horror.
"Did you really think my father retired without keeping tabs on your dark-money accounts in Eastern Europe, Richard?" Maya asked, taking a step forward as Gabriel stepped up beside her, drawing his weapon with lethal grace. "We didn't just trace your call today. We seized your offshore accounts twenty minutes ago. You don't have twenty million dollars. You don't even have twenty dollars to buy a cup of coffee."
"You... you ruined me!" Richard screamed, his face twisting into madness. In a final act of desperation, he raised his pistol, aiming it straight at Maya’s chest. "If I go down, you're coming with me!"
BANG!
A shot rang through the warehouse.
Julian shrieked, covering his head. Catherine fainted instantly.
Maya didn't flinch. She didn't even blink.
Because before Richard’s finger could fully squeeze the trigger, Gabriel had stepped directly in front of her, firing a single, precise round straight through Richard’s wrist.
The pistol flew from Richard’s shattered hand, clattering across the concrete floor. Richard collapsed onto his knees, howling in agony as he clutched his bleeding arm.
Gabriel stood like a wall of iron in front o

f Maya, his weapon still aimed at Richard's head, his body tense and ready to kill.
"Touch her again," Gabriel whispered, his voice dark enough to chill the blood in Richard's veins, "and the next bullet goes between your eyes."
