Chapter 2 - The Mask Slips

Julian blinked, a nervous chuckle escaping his lips as he tried to regain control of the situation. "Maya, stop playing games! What is that USB? What crest is that? Did you steal that from my father’s office?!"

"Steal it?" Maya laughed—a sharp, melodic sound that sent a shiver straight down Julian’s spine. "Julian, your father’s office doesn't even have security tight enough to keep out a stray cat. Why would I steal something that belongs to my family?"

Before anyone could process her words, the heavy double doors at the back of the ballroom burst open.

A dozen men in tailored charcoal suits marched into the room in two flawless lines, pushing aside the Montgomery security team as if they were made of paper. The guests scrambled back in fear, making way for a tall, silver-haired man walking down the center aisle. He wore a pristine Italian suit, a gold dragon lapel pin glittering against his chest, and his eyes were like cold granite.

It was Victor Vance—the ruthless chairman of Vance Global Enterprises, a man who rarely appeared in public and whose word could collapse entire stock markets with a single phone call.

"Victor Vance?!" Catherine gasped, her hands flying to her pearl necklace. "What is he doing here? Did... did someone invite the Vance family?"

Victor ignored the socialites, stepping past Julian without a second glance. He walked directly up to Maya, stopped two paces away, and bowed deeply from the waist.

"Lady Maya," Victor said, his powerful voice ringing through the room. "The board of directors has completed the audit. The trap is sprung."

The entire ballroom went deathly quiet.

Lady Maya?

Julian stared at his mother, then back at Maya, his mouth hanging open. "Victor... Mr. Vance, there must be a mistake! This girl is Maya Lin! Her father owns a failing cake shop in the slums!"

Victor turned his head slowly, casting a look of pure disdain toward Julian. "Her father is Alexander Vance—my elder brother and the true majority shareholder of Vance International. Sixteen years ago, my brother withdrew from public life to live quietly after my sister-in-law passed away. Lady Maya chose to live as a normal citizen to learn the value of hard work before taking her seat as CEO."

Victor looked back at Maya with fierce pride. "She did not need your family’s status, boy. Your family’s total net worth wouldn't cover the tax bill on her private island."

Catherine’s knees buckled. She clutched the edge of a banquet table to keep from collapsing onto the floor. "No... no, that’s impossible! She worked for us! She served us tea! She wore clothes from bargain racks!"

"I wore simple clothes because I wanted to see who you really were, Catherine," Maya said, taking the silver USB drive from her purse and handing it to Victor. "And I got my answer. For two years, I endured your insults. I let you mock my background. I let Julian treat me like a trophy he was ashamed to display. Because I wanted to see if there was a shred of humanity in this family."

Maya took a step toward Julian, her eyes burning with a cold, unrelenting fire.

"When my father pretend-defaulted on his small business loan last year, it was a test," Maya revealed, her smile widening as Julian’s face drained of all color. "We wanted to see if the Montgomery family—the family claiming to love me—would help us. Instead, your mother bought up the debt through a shell company, inflated the interest rates by three hundred percent, and used it to blackmail me into signing away my life."

"Maya... sweetheart..." Julian stammered, taking a desperate step forward, his hands trembling. "I... I didn't know! My mother handled the finances! I love you, Maya! You know I love you!"

"Love me?" Maya scoffed, glancing down at the torn white silk on the floor. "You stood there thirty seconds ago and told me to kneel to your mother after she stripped my dress off in front of three hundred people. Is that your idea of love, Julian?"

"It was a misunderstanding!" Catherine cried out, stumbling forward, her composure entirely shattered. "Maya... please! We can fix this! The engagement is still valid! You and Julian can get married next week! The Montgomery and Vance empires joined together—think of the power!"

"The Montgomery empire?" Maya tilted her head, turning to Victor. "Uncle Victor, how much of the Montgomery portfolio do we currently own?"

Victor pulled a leather-bound tablet from his jacket. "As of four minutes ago, Lady Maya, Vance Global executed the foreclosure clause on the Montgomery shipping line, the real estate holding firm, and this very hotel. We own ninety-eight percent of their assets. Their bank accounts have been frozen."

A collective gasp exploded through the crowd.

"You... you foreclosed on us?!" Catherine shrieked, her voice cracking into a desperate scream. "You can't do that! This is my gala!"

"Not anymore," Maya said softly. She turned to the head of security who had entered with Victor. "Security, please escort Mrs. Montgomery and her son off the premises. They are trespassing on Vance property."

May you like

"Maya, no! Please!" Julian cried out as two towering guards grabbed his arms, pinning them behind his back. "Don't do this to me! I'm your fiancé!"

"You were my fiancé," Maya corrected, pulling the diamond engagement ring off her finger. She didn't throw it at him. She dropped it into her glass of champagne, watching it sink to the bottom with a quiet clink. "Now, you're just another debtor."
