Chapter 1 - The Silk and the Ashes

The silence inside the grand crystal ballroom of the Grand Regent Hotel was deafening. Seconds ago, the air had been thick with the sound of laughter, clinking champagne flutes, and the rhythmic sway of classical violins. Now, nothing moved except the torn strips of white silk resting at Maya’s feet like fallen petals.
Doña Catherine Montgomery stood over her, her manicured hand still raised, her breathing heavy with triumph. The custom-designed white gown—a masterpiece worth tens of thousands of dollars— lay ruined, ripped straight down the back seams, exposing Maya’s delicate shoulders and the simple cotton slip she wore underneath.
"This dress is far too expensive for a girl whose family lives on government handouts," Catherine hissed, her voice echoing off the golden pillars. She wiped her fingers with a linen napkin as if touching Maya had contaminated her. "You thought you could walk into a Montgomery engagement gala wearing our money? You are a parasite, Maya. Nothing more."
Maya stood frozen on the marble floor. Tears streamed down her flushed cheeks, her shoulders trembling as hundreds of the city’s wealthiest elites stared at her. Some gasped behind their diamond-encrusted masks; others pulled out their phones to record her humiliation.
Beside Catherine stood Julian Montgomery—Maya’s fiancé of two years. He didn't cover her. He didn't step between his mother and the woman he had promised to love. Instead, he adjusted his velvet bow tie and stepped forward, pointing an accusing finger at Maya’s face.
"Just apologize to my mother, Maya!" Julian shouted, his tone dripping with fake indignation to impress the crowd. "Stop making a scene! You’ve embarrassed my family enough tonight. Apologize, kneel if you have to, and maybe my mother won't cancel the wedding entirely!"
"Julian..." Maya choked out, her voice barely a whisper. "She ripped my dress... in front of everyone..."
"Because you don't belong here!" Julian snapped, stepping closer to lower his voice to a harsh whisper. "Did you really think a nobody from the southern district was ever equal to us? My mother gave you a chance, and you acted like a spoiled brat. Say you're sorry, or you walk out of here with nothing!"
Catherine smirked, resting her hands on her hips as she turned toward her personal assistant, who was waiting at the edge of the stage. "Harrison! Bring me the prenuptial agreement and the debt surrender forms. Let’s finish this tonight. Once she signs away her rights to Julian’s trust fund and hands over her family's bakery deed to cover her father's medical debts, she can crawl back to the gutter."
Harrison rushed forward, holding a sleek black leather folder. He bowed nervously, handing it directly to Catherine.
"Look closely, everyone!" Catherine announced, holding the folder high like a trophy. "This is what happens when a beggar tries to steal a crown!"
With a dramatic flourish, Catherine snapped open the gold latch and pulled the leather binder open.
She froze.
The crowd leaned in, expecting to see thick stacks of legal parchment, court summons, and debt collection notices.
The folder was completely empty.
Not a single sheet of paper was inside. No contract. No deed. Nothing but smooth black velvet lining.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Catherine roared, slamming the binder against Harrison’s chest. "Where are the foreclosure papers for her father’s business?! Where is the prenup?!"
Harrison turned pale, his jaw trembling. "M-Madam... those were the files you handed me from your private safe twenty minutes ago..."
Confused murmurs rippled through the ballroom like wildfire. Julian frowned, taking the folder from his mother and staring into its empty void. "Mom, what's going on? Where are her debt papers?"
In the middle of the room, the sound of soft crying suddenly stopped.
Maya raised her head. She wiped the wetness from her cheeks with the back of her hand. The helpless, terrified girl who had been trembling seconds ago was gone. Her posture straightened, her spine locking like forged steel.
A slow, cold, radiant smile bloomed across her face.
"Looking for these, Catherine?" Maya asked softly.
She reached into the small, beaded clutch purse sitting on the cocktail table beside her and pulled out a single silver USB flash drive along with a original gold-embossed crest.
Catherine’s eyes widened in horror as her gaze fell upon the crest—a double-headed dragon surrounding a crowned shield. It wasn't the Montgomery family seal. It was the mark of the Vance Syndicate—the shadowy, multi-billion-dollar global conglomerate that owned the bank holding the Montgomery family’s entire debt.
"You..." Catherine gasped, taking an involuntary step back. "How do you have that seal?!"
"You think you know me," Maya said, her voice dropping into a smooth, commanding register that carried across the quiet hall with terrifying clarity. She stepped out of the torn ruins of the white dress, kicking the ruined silk aside without looking down. "You thought I was a poor orphan girl working eighteen-hour shifts at a bakery just to survive. You thought my father was a bankrupt baker."

Maya looked directly into Julian’s pale face.
"You have no idea who I really am."
