Chapter 3 - The Aftermath of Gold

The news swept through the city’s high-society circles like a tsunami.
Within twelve hours, videos recorded by guests at the gala were leaking onto every major social media platform. The headlines were brutal: “Billionaire Heiress Humiliated in Fake Debt Scheme,” “The Fall of the House of Montgomery,” and “From Bakery Girl to Syndicate Queen.”
The Montgomery family’s stock plummeted to absolute zero by market open the following morning. Creditors stormed their private mansion, seizing luxury cars, art collections, and designer wardrobes.
Meanwhile, on the top floor of the Vance Tower, Maya stood before a floor-to-ceiling glass wall looking out over the misty city skyline. She was dressed in a sleek, tailored navy pantsuit, her long hair falling in soft waves over her shoulders.
A knock sounded at the double oak doors of her private office.
"Come in," Maya said without turning around.
The doors opened, and a young man walked in carrying a stack of files. He was tall, lean, with sharp features and piercing amber eyes that seemed to analyze everything in the room at once. His name was Gabriel Thorne—the former head of intelligence for Vance Global and Maya’s newly appointed chief of staff.
"The Montgomery family has been evicted from their Lomas estate, Lady Maya," Gabriel reported, his tone professional, yet laced with a subtle warmth. "They are currently staying in a mid-tier motel near the docks. Julian has tried calling your personal line forty-seven times today."
"Block his number," Maya replied coldly. "What about Catherine?"
"She has spent the morning attempting to meet with board members of various banks, but no one will take her calls," Gabriel said, setting the files on her desk. "However, there is a complication."
Maya turned around, her brow furrowing. "What complication?"
"Julian’s uncle—Richard Montgomery—has just returned from overseas," Gabriel explained, bringing up a profile on his tablet. "Unlike the rest of his family, Richard runs the dark-money operations for the Montgomery clan in Eastern Europe. He isn't interested in saving his sister's reputation; he's interested in revenge. Our intelligence suggests he has already hired a team to audit your family's old bakery operations, looking for anything illegal to drag your father’s name through the mud."
Maya’s eyes narrowed. "My father lived a clean life. He built that bakery with his own sweat. They won't find anything."
"They don't need to find real evidence, Lady Maya," Gabriel warned, stepping closer to her desk. "They just need to manufacture enough scandal to tie up your assets in court until the board loses confidence in your leadership. Remember, you take full command of the Vance Board next month. If a scandal hits now, the conservative directors might push for an interim CEO."
Maya leaned against her desk, staring at Gabriel. She noticed the slight tension in his posture, the fierce protectiveness in his amber eyes. Gabriel had been hired by her father six years ago, working quietly in the background to protect her while she lived her normal life. He had watched her endure Julian’s neglect for two years without saying a word, obeying her command to stay hidden.
"You knew Julian was no good for me, didn't you, Gabriel?" Maya asked suddenly, her tone softening.
Gabriel paused, taken aback by the question. He adjusted his cuff links, picking his words carefully. "It was not my place to judge your choices, Lady Maya."
"We're alone in this office, Gabriel. Drop the title."
Gabriel met her gaze, his amber eyes darkening with an emotion he had kept suppressed for years. "I thought he was a fool," Gabriel admitted softly. "A blind, arrogant fool who possessed the rarest jewel in the world and treated it like cheap glass."
Maya felt a sudden flutter in her chest—a warmth she hadn't experienced in years. She looked at Gabriel, really looking at him, realizing how steadily he had stood beside her while her world was turning upside down.
Before she could answer, her private desk phone began ringing loudly.
Maya picked up the receiver. "Maya Lin."
"Maya..." a broken, raspy voice came through the speaker. It was Julian. He was crying, his breath ragged. "Please... you have to help us! Richard... my uncle Richard... he took my mother! He said if I don't get you to transfer twenty million dollars to his offshore account by tonight, he's going to release the fake documents about your father's bakery!"
Maya’s hand tightened around the receiver. "Put Richard on the phone."
A dark, heavy laugh replaced Julian’s weeping.
"Ah, the little princess speaks," Richard’s gravelly voice drawled through the speaker. "You played a nice trick at the gala, little girl. But this isn't a ballroom, and I'm not my weak-willed sister. You have six hours to drop the foreclosure on our shipping lines and deposit twenty million into my account. If you don't... the whole world will see video footage of your precious father allegedly laundering syndicate money through his flour shipments."
"My father never laundered a single cent!" Maya snarled.
May you like
"Truth doesn't matter on the internet, princess," Richard chuckled coldly. "Six hours. Or your father's legacy dies tonight."
The line went dead.
