Chapter 6 - The Confrontation at the Harbor

The Harbor Club was an exclusive, high-walled private establishment built on a pier overlooking the grey waters of Lake Michigan. Reserved for the city’s most powerful politicians, judges, and corporate titans, it was a place where deals were made in quiet mahogany dining rooms behind closed doors.

At 10:55 AM, a sleek black armored SUV pulled into the private courtyard.

Dante Vance stepped out, flanked by Marco and four imposing security operatives in sharp dark suits. Dante walked up the marble steps with an effortless, commanding air, his long black wool coat sweeping around his boots as he entered the private dining room on the second floor.

Sitting at a long corner table overlooking the misty harbor were two men.

District Attorney Richard Vance—a silver-haired man in his late fifties wearing an expensive three-piece suit—sat with his arms crossed, his face set in a stern, aggressive scowl. Beside him sat Cameron. Cameron’s right hand was wrapped in a thick white medical bandage from where Dante’s guard had crushed his wrist the night before. His face was pale, his eyes wide with an uneasy mix of arrogance and deep-seated fear.

Dante stepped into the private room, his men taking up positions by the entrance doors, effectively sealing the room off from the rest of the club.

Dante pulled out the heavy leather chair at the head of the table and sat down without asking for permission.

"Dante," Richard Vance barked, slamming a heavy palm onto the table. "You have five minutes to explain why your thugs assaulted my nephew at your club last night, and where you are holding Nora Bennett!"

Dante didn't answer immediately. He slowly pulled a silver cigarette case from his coat, lit a thin cigar, and exhaled a smooth cloud of grey smoke into the polished air between them.

"Your nephew," Dante said softly, his dark eyes locking onto Cameron, "is a sniveling little parasite who made the catastrophic mistake of putting his hands on a woman under my protection."

"She is my girlfriend!" Cameron shouted, leaning forward with an angry glare, though he quickly shrank back when Marco took a step toward his chair. "She belongs with me! You kidnapped her!"

"Silence, Cameron!" Richard snapped at his nephew, before turning back to Dante with a cold, political sneer. "Dante, I don't care about your underground rules. Nora Bennett’s mother lives in a state-assisted care facility that operates under my district jurisdiction. Nora herself is a private citizen. If you do not return her to Cameron’s custody by two o'clock today, I will execute a search warrant on Blackwood Manor with fifty armed state troopers."

Dante let out a low, dark laugh—a sound so devoid of humor it made the hair on the back of Cameron’s neck stand up.

"Execute a warrant on my estate, Richard?" Dante asked, leaning forward, resting his elbows on the mahogany wood. "With what evidence? The word of your abusive nephew?"

"I am the District Attorney!" Richard spat. "My word is the law in this city!"

Dante reached inside his dark wool coat, pulled out a thick yellow manila envelope, and tossed it casually onto the center of the table. It slid across the polished wood, stopping right in front of Richard’s hands.

"Open it," Dante commanded softly.

Richard frowned, his eyes darting suspiciously toward Dante before he picked up the envelope and unsealed the top. He pulled out a stack of thick financial audits, offshore bank statements, and high-resolution photographs.

As Richard scanned the first three pages, the arrogant color drained from his face, replaced by a ghastly, ash-grey terror.

"What... what is this?" Richard stammered, his fingers shaking so violently the paper rattled.

"That," Dante explained with brutal precision, "is the complete paper trail of the eight million dollars you embezzled from the City Pension Fund over the past four years, funneled through dummy shell corporations registered in Panama under Cameron’s name."

Cameron gasped, his head snapping toward his uncle. "Uncle Richard?! What is he talking about?!"

"Shut up!" Richard screamed at Cameron, his face slick with sudden cold sweat.

"Furthermore," Dante continued, his voice dropping into a lethal register, "those photographs show your nephew meeting with high-level narcotics distributors in the south district three weeks ago—distributors who happen to work for my organization. Cameron was attempting to buy illegal pharmaceuticals to keep Nora docile and reliant on his control."

Dante stood up from his chair, his tall, broad frame casting a long, terrifying shadow over both men.

"You have two choices, Richard," Dante stated, his tone absolute and unyielding. "Option one: I deliver this entire folder to the Federal Bureau of Investigation at twelve o'clock today. You and your nephew will both be indicted under federal RICO statutes, your assets will be seized, and you will both spend the next thirty years in a maximum-security federal prison."

Richard swallowed hard, his throat dry as dust. "And... and option two?"

"Option two," Dante leaned down, resting both hands on the table, staring directly into Richard’s trembling eyes. "You sign an immediate, irrevocable transfer of guardianship for Nora’s mother to an independent medical trust funded entirely by my estate. Cameron signs a legally binding non-disclosure and full restraining order, surrendering all rights to Nora’s former apartment, her belongings, and her record. And Cameron leaves this state by midnight tonight, never to return."

Cameron jumped up from his chair, his voice cracking with hysterical panic. "Uncle Richard, no! You can't let him do this! You're the DA! Fight him!"

Richard looked at the terrifying mountain of evidence sitting on the table—evidence that would destroy his career, his family name, and his freedom in a single afternoon.

He turned slowly to look at his nephew, his eyes filled with cold, self-preserving rage.

"Shut your mouth, Cameron," Richard whispered, his voice broken. He turned back to Dante, nodding his head weakly. "We'll take option two."
