Chapter 2 - A Sanctuary of Velvet and Steel

Nora couldn't answer him right away. The words caught in her throat, choked by months of accumulated shame, fear, and isolation.

For over a year, Cameron had systematically stripped her life down to nothing. He had convinced her mother that Nora was emotionally unstable, called her employer to report fictitious mental breakdowns until she was fired, and slowly severed every thread of connection she had to the outside world. To the rest of the town, Cameron was the devoted, patient boyfriend dealing with a tragic, troubled girl. To Nora, he was a silent predator who made sure she had nowhere else to run.

"A year," Nora whispered finally, her tear-stained face reflected in the dark glass of the table. "Fourteen months."

Dante didn't interrupt her. He motioned to one of his men standing near the back wall—a sharp-looking man in a navy suit holding an encrypted tablet.

"Marco," Dante said without looking back. "Run a full background check on Cameron Vance. I want his financial records, his personal associates, his medical histories, and every property registered under his name by midnight."

"Right away, Boss," Marco replied, his fingers already flying across the screen before he walked quickly toward the private exit.

Nora looked up at Dante in alarm. "Please... you don't have to do that. He's dangerous. His uncle really is the district attorney. If Cameron realizes you're helping me, he'll use the police to come after you!"

A faint, dark smile touched Dante’s lips—the kind of smile that made Nora realize just how terrifying the man beside her truly was.

"Little bird," Dante said softly, reaching out with one finger to tilt her chin up gently, forcing her to look into his eyes. "The police in this city don't move a single squad car without my implicit permission. District Attorney Vance exists in that office because I allow him to sit in that chair. Your ex-boyfriend has no power here. None."

Nora stared at him, her heart beating a fast, fluttery rhythm against her ribs. She was sitting in the private lair of the most feared crime boss in the state, a man whose name was whispered in hushed tones across the underground networks of the city. Yet, standing in his shadow, she felt safer than she had in fourteen nightmare-filled months.

"Why are you helping me?" Nora asked, her brown eyes filled with genuine confusion. "You don't even know me. I jumped into your booth. I embarrassed you in front of your men."

"You didn't embarrass me," Dante said calmly, adjusting the cuff of his dark suit jacket. "You showed survival instinct. You saw an apex predator coming for you, and you chose the only man in this room capable of putting him down. I respect intelligence."

He stood up from the leather booth, his tall, broad frame looming over her. He extended a hand toward her—not aggressively, but with an open, patient posture.

"You have forty-two dollars, a dead phone, and nowhere to go," Dante pointed out, his voice smooth and steady. "My estate has twenty bedrooms, twenty-four-hour private security, and a medical staff. You can stay tonight. Tomorrow, we figure out how to take your life back."

Nora looked at his large, calloused hand. She knew that stepping into Dante Vance’s world meant crossing a line from which she could never return. But looking back down toward the main floor of the club, where the dark memory of Cameron still lingered, she knew there was no going back anyway.

She reached out, placing her small, trembling hand into his.

Dante’s fingers closed around hers—warm, strong, and protective. He pulled her gently to her feet, keeping her close to his side as his remaining security team formed a tight, impenetrable wall around them, escorting her out through the private rear elevator into the waiting black armored limousine below.
