Chapter 4 - The Ledger of Sins

Downstairs in his private ground-floor study, Dante Vance sat behind a massive mahogany desk, a glass of crystal-clear scotch resting near his elbow.

The room was dimly lit, the only illumination coming from the glowing screens of three laptops operated by his top lieutenant, Marco.

"We have the full file on Cameron Vance, Boss," Marco said, sliding a thick leather folder across the polished wood desk. "It's ugly."

Dante picked up the folder, flipping open the cover. His dark eyes scanned the documents inside with cold, methodical precision.

"He's clean on paper," Marco explained, standing near the desk with his hands folded behind his back. "Works as a mid-level financial analyst at Vance Capital—a firm owned by his uncle, the DA. No criminal record, no police reports. But when we dug into his personal digital history and interviewed two of his previous girlfriends... a pattern emerged."

Dante’s jaw tightened. "What kind of pattern?"

"Psychological destruction," Marco stated grimly. "He targets young women with limited family support. He slowly isolates them, takes control of their bank accounts, and uses his uncle’s political connections to intimidate anyone who tries to intervene. His previous girlfriend, a girl named Sarah Miller, tried to leave him two years ago. Cameron had his uncle’s police buddies harass her with false traffic violations and code enforcement fines until she suffered a complete mental breakdown and moved out of the state."

Dante slammed the folder shut, the loud snap echoing through the quiet study like a gunshot.

"And Nora?" Dante asked, his voice dangerously low.

"Nora Bennett," Marco read from his tablet. "Twenty-four years old. Former graphic designer. Her father passed away three years ago. Her mother lives in an assisted care facility in the south suburbs—a facility funded largely by Cameron’s family foundations. That’s how he kept her leash tight. If Nora stepped out of line, Cameron threatened to pull her mother’s care funding."

Dante leaned back in his leather chair, staring into the dark flames flickering in the fireplace. The sheer tactical cruelty of Cameron’s operation made Dante’s blood run hot. He had dealt with rival mafia bosses, corrupt politicians, and dangerous cartels for over a decade, but men like Cameron—cowards who hid behind handsome smiles and legal power to torture defenseless women—were a special kind of vermin.

"Boss," Marco added, leaning in slightly. "Cameron’s uncle, District Attorney Richard Vance, called your private line ten minutes ago. He’s demanding a private meeting tomorrow morning. He says his nephew was assaulted at your club and that you're harboring a kidnapped woman."

Dante picked up his glass of scotch, taking a slow, measured sip.

"Tell Richard I will see him at eleven o'clock tomorrow morning at the Harbor Club," Dante commanded, a lethal edge in his voice. "And tell him to bring his nephew. I want Cameron in the room when I dismantle their little family enterprise."

"Understood, Boss," Marco nodded, turning to carry out the orders.

Dante stood up from his desk and walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the estate grounds. He looked up toward the illuminated windows of the west wing, where Nora’s room lay peaceful and dark.

He had promised her that no one would touch her while she was with him. Dante Vance was a man of many sins, but he had never broken a vow in his life. Cameron Vance was about to learn the true cost of making an enemy out of the dark lord of the city.
