Chapter 3 - The Fortress on the Ridge

The drive through the rain-slicked streets of the city was silent and swift.

Nora sat in the back of the spacious limousine, staring out the tinted windows as the glittering neon lights of the downtown district faded into the dark, winding roads of the northern hills. Dante sat across from her, reviewing documents on a illuminated tablet, occasionally casting a quiet, watchful eye over her shivering frame.

The limousine finally turned onto a private stone driveway, passing through a massive wrought-iron gate guarded by two armed men in dark tactical gear. The gates closed behind them with a heavy, mechanical thud.

At the end of the long driveway stood the Vance estate—a majestic, stone-carved manor perched on the crest of the ridge, overlooking the entire glowing valley of the city below.

The limousine pulled up to the grand front portico. The driver opened the door, and Dante stepped out first, holding an umbrella over Nora as she stepped into the cool night air.

"Welcome to Blackwood Manor," Dante said softly, guiding her up the wide marble steps toward the heavy oak front doors.

Inside, the foyer was breathtaking. Soaring ceilings, warm crystal chandeliers, and polished hardwood floors gave the space an air of timeless, quiet luxury. A middle-aged woman in a neat grey dress hurried down the grand staircase, her face lighting up with concern as she saw Nora’s damp clothing and pale cheeks.

"Mrs. Gable," Dante addressed her as they stepped inside. "This is Nora. She will be staying in the primary guest suite in the west wing. Prepare a warm bath, dry clothes, and a hot meal for her immediately."

"Right away, Mr. Vance," Mrs. Gable replied warmly, stepping forward and offering Nora a gentle, motherly smile. "Follow me, dear. You look completely exhausted."

Nora paused, looking back at Dante, who stood near the foyer table, removing his heavy wool coat.

"Thank you, Dante," Nora said, her voice small, using his first name for the very first time.

Dante paused, turning to look at her. The harsh line of his jaw softened almost imperceptibly.

"Get some sleep, Nora," he replied softly. "No one enters the west wing without my permission. You can lock your door from the inside. Rest easy."

Mrs. Gable led Nora up the grand staircase and down a long, carpeted corridor lined with classic oil paintings and quiet wall sconces. They stopped in front of a pair of heavy mahogany doors at the end of the hallway.

Inside, the guest suite was larger than Nora’s entire former apartment. A massive king-sized bed with plush white linens sat against the far wall, facing a crackling marble fireplace. Through an adjoining archway, a luxurious bathroom featured a deep clawfoot soaking tub already filled with steaming, scented water.

"There are clean cotton robes and pajamas in the closet, child," Mrs. Gable said gently, setting a soft towel on the vanity. "I’ll bring up a bowl of hot chicken soup and tea in twenty minutes. If you need anything—anything at all—just press the brass button by the nightstand."

"Thank you, Mrs. Gable," Nora whispered, tears pricking the corners of her eyes at the unexpected kindness.

Once the housekeeper left, closing the heavy mahogany door behind her, Nora walked over to the door and turned the heavy brass deadbolt.

The sound echoed through the room. For the first time in over a year, Nora stood in a room that was entirely locked against Cameron.

She walked into the bathroom, shed her wet, ruined clothes, and sank into the hot water of the soaking tub. As the warmth enveloped her sore, bruised body, the tight knot of fear that had lived in her chest for fourteen months finally began to unravel. She buried her face in her hands and cried—silent, cleansing tears of relief that washed away the nightmare of her past.
