Chapter 5 - The Noose Tightens

The storm outside mirrored the chaos in the sky. Rain lashed against the windows of Marcus's private security SUV as they roared toward a private airfield on the outskirts of Chicago. Isabella and her father thought they had outsmarted the Thorne family, but they had underestimated the sheer reach of Marcus’s influence.
At the airfield, Isabella was rushing up the steps of a private Gulfstream jet, her crimson dress replaced by a dark coat, her face twisted in panic. Victor Rossi stood at the base of the stairs, shouting at the pilots.
Suddenly, four black SUVs breached the airfield gates, tires screeching across the wet tarmac. They blocked the runway entirely.
Isabella screamed as Marcus stepped out of the lead vehicle, flanked by federal marshals and state troopers. The flight crew immediately shut down the jet's engines, realizing they were surrounded by law enforcement.
"It's over, Victor," Marcus said, walking calmly through the pouring rain, his eyes locked on the older billionaire. "Your banks have frozen your assets. Your lawyers have abandoned you. And your daughter is going to a federal penitentiary."
Victor drew a concealed firearm from his jacket, his face manic. "I'll kill you before you take her!"
Before he could even raise the barrel, a sniper shot from a state trooper disabled Victor's right shoulder, sending the gun clattering to the tarmac. He collapsed, groaning in pain, as federal agents swarmed him.
Isabella ran down the steps, throwing herself at Marcus's feet, completely stripped of her aristocratic pride. "Marcus, please! I did it because I love you! Khloe didn't deserve you! Please, tell them to stop!"

Marcus looked down at her with nothing but absolute disgust. "You didn't do it for love, Isabella. You did it for greed and malice. And you chose the wrong family to destroy."
He turned his back as the federal agents dragged her away, crying and screaming his name into the rainy night.
