Chapter 5 - The Guarded Heart

The aftermath of the purge was swift. Alessandro eliminated every single loyalist tied to Matteo’s faction. The Duca family was now completely under his iron fist, stronger and cleaner than it had ever been.
But back at the estate, the atmosphere had changed. The grand, cold villa no longer felt like a fortress of war; it felt like a home.
Alessandro walked into the sunlit garden three weeks after the incident. He watched from the terrace as Emma ran across the manicured lawns, chasing butterflies with her gray stuffed rabbit tucked under her arm. Sophia walked behind her, a genuine smile on her face for the first time in a year. Alessandro had transferred Hector’s pension into a massive trust fund for Emma and had given Sophia full management of the estate's humanitarian foundations.
Sophia noticed Alessandro and walked over to the terrace. "Good afternoon, Mr. Duca."
"Alessandro, please," he corrected her softly. "How is she doing?"
"She's happy. She doesn't have nightmares anymore," Sophia said, her eyes shining with gratitude. "I don't know how to thank you. You gave us justice for Hector. You gave us a life we never dreamed of."
"No, Sophia," Alessandro said, looking at her deeply. For years, he had been surrounded by people who wanted his money, his power, or his life. But this woman and her child had brought truth into his world. "You saved me. Emma saved me. In my world, loyalty is bought with blood or money. But what she did... it was pure. It reminded me of why I protect this family."
Sophia looked down, a slight blush creeping up her cheeks. Over the past few weeks, the boundaries between boss and protector, between employer and something deeper, had begun to blur. Alessandro was a dangerous man to the world, but to them, he was a shield.

"We feel safe with you, Alessandro," she said quietly.
"You are safe," he replied, reaching out to gently touch her hand on the stone railing. "Always."
