Chapter 4 - Trap at the Round Table

The meeting was held at The Obsidian, a private, high-end club owned by the Duca family. The air inside the VIP conference room was thick with cigar smoke and tension. Six capos and Uncle Matteo sat around a large oak table.
When Alessandro walked in, flanked by Marco and Santos, the room went quiet. Alessandro didn't sit down. He walked to the head of the table, his hands resting on the back of his chair.
"Alessandro," Matteo smiled, though the warmth didn't reach his eyes. "You're late. We were just discussing the new territories with the Bratva."
"We have a change of agenda tonight, Uncle," Alessandro said. He nodded to Santos, who threw a heavy leather bag onto the center of the table. The bag tumbled open, revealing stacks of falsified logistics ledgers, bank statements from Swiss accounts under Matteo's name, and a signed confession from Doctor Vane.
Matteo’s smile froze. The other capos leaned in, their eyes widening as they realized what they were looking at.
"For three years, someone has been stealing from the family," Alessandro announced, his voice echoing with absolute authority. "They murdered a loyal mechanic named Hector Alvarez to cover it up. And this morning, they tried to put a lethal dose of neurotoxin into my morning coffee."
A collective gasp went around the room. One of the older capos, Don Silvio (not Matteo’s enforcer), stood up. "Who did this, Alessandro? This is treason against the Commission!"
"It is," Alessandro said, looking directly at Matteo. "What do you have to say for yourself, Uncle?"
Matteo’s face turned into a mask of pure malice. Realizing the game was up, he didn't beg. Instead, he laughed—a harsh, dry sound. "You're a boy playing a man's game, Alessandro! Your father was weak, and you are weak! You worry about mechanics and maids while millions are waiting to be made! Yes, I did it! And you think you can leave this room alive?"
Matteo reached into his jacket, but Alessandro was faster. A single, deafening gunshot rang out.
Matteo froze. He looked down at his chest, where a dark crimson blossom was spreading across his silk shirt. Alessandro held a smoking silver Beretta, his hand perfectly steady.
"My father wasn't weak," Alessandro whispered as Matteo fell forward onto the oak table, knocking over a crystal glass of whiskey. "He just trusted the wrong brother."

Matteo’s enforcers outside the door tried to rush in, but Marco and the loyal Duca guards neutralized them within seconds. The remaining capos in the room immediately dropped to their knees, bowing their heads to the undisputed king of the city.
"Clean this room," Alessandro ordered, putting his gun away. "The war is over. I'm going home."
