Chapter 3 - The Doctor’s Confession

By midnight, the basement of the Duca estate was freezing. Doctor Vane sat tied to a heavy iron chair, his glasses broken on the floor, blood dripping from his lip. Marco stood behind him, his hands gloved, waiting for Alessandro’s signal.
Alessandro walked into the room, tossing a medical report onto Vane’s lap. It was Hector Alvarez's exhumed autopsy report, rushed through a loyal coroner within six hours.
"Synthetic neurotoxin," Alessandro said, his tone icy. "The same substance found in my espresso cup this morning. You signed off on Hector's death as a heart attack, Vane. Why?"
Vane swallowed hard, looking terrified. "Alessandro, please! I’ve served your family for twenty years!"
"And you betrayed us for how much?" Alessandro slammed his hand onto the armrest of the chair, making the doctor flinch. "Who paid you to poison a mechanic? And who gave you the poison to give to Danny?"
"I don't know the mastermind! I swear!" Vane sobbed. "I only dealt with an intermediary. It was Matteo's personal enforcer, Silvio! He brought me the toxin. He told me Hector had found a hidden compartment in one of the shipment trucks—a compartment containing unregistered weapons and drugs that weren't going into the family ledger. Matteo was skimming millions from your operations, Alessandro! Hector found the logs. He had to be silenced!"
The truth hit Alessandro like a physical blow. His own uncle. The man who had helped raise him after his father died. Matteo hadn't just been skimming; he was setting up a coup. Poisoning Alessandro would leave a power vacuum, and as consigliere, Matteo would take control of the entire Duca empire, blaming it on a rival family.
"And the coffee this morning?" Alessandro asked, his chest tightening with a mix of rage and grief.
"Matteo knew you were getting close to auditing the logistics accounts. He couldn't risk you finding out about the ghost shipments. He ordered Silvio to recruit the new cook. It was supposed to look like a sudden stroke at the breakfast table." Vane looked up, pleading. "I was forced into it! They threatened my family!"

"Everyone has a family, Doctor. But you helped destroy Sophia’s," Alessandro said coldly. He turned his back. "Marco. Clean this up. Then get the men ready. We're going to the family meeting."
As Alessandro walked out of the basement, his mind flashed to Sophia and Emma. If it hadn't been for that little girl’s sharp memory, he would be a corpse on a slab right now, and his empire would belong to a traitor. The debt he owed them was immeasurable.
