Chapter 1 - The Shadows Inside the Marble

The silence that followed Emma’s words was not just quiet; it was the kind of silence that precedes a bomb blast. Alessandro Duca remained crouched on the cold gray stone floor, his eyes locked onto the three-year-old girl. The porcelain cup in his hand suddenly felt heavier than a lead weight.
"Papa's medicine," Alessandro repeated, his voice dropping into a register that made Danny the cook instinctively step back from the stove. "Sophia. What medicine is she talking about?"
Sophia Alvarez looked as if she might faint. She dropped to her knees beside her daughter, pulling Emma into her arms. She was trembling so violently that the dish towel in her hand fell to the floor. "Mr. Duca, I swear... I don't know. My husband... Hector... he died a year ago. The doctors said it was sudden heart failure. He was given an experimental sedative for his chronic pain in his final weeks. It... it had a very distinct, bitter almond and chemical scent. But he died in his sleep. We thought it was just his heart."
Alessandro’s mind raced. Bitter almond. Cyanide or a rare, synthetic neurotoxin disguised as cardiac medication. If Hector Alvarez had been poisoned with the same substance now sitting in Alessandro’s cup, it meant this wasn't a sudden plot. It meant the killer had been practicing. Testing the dosage. And they had used a simple, innocent laborer to do it.
Slowly, Alessandro stood up. He turned his gaze toward Danny, the new cook. Danny’s knuckles were white as he held the spatula.
"Danny," Alessandro said smoothly, stepping toward the center island. "You brewed this batch."
"Yes, Mr. Duca! Just like every morning! Standard imported beans, double shot, no sugar," Danny stuttered, sweat breaking out along his hairline. "I didn't do anything! I swear on my mother's life!"
"Then you wouldn't mind taking a sip," Alessandro said, placing the cup gently on the marble counter, sliding it toward the cook.
Danny stared at the dark liquid. The steam rose, carrying that faint, imperceptible scent that only a child’s untainted memory could recognize. Danny reached out a shaking hand, but before his fingers could touch the porcelain, his knees buckled. He didn't grab the cup; instead, he bolted toward the back exit leading to the gardens.
"Marco! Santos!" Alessandro roared.
The kitchen doors burst open before Danny could even reach the handle. Two of Alessandro's top security detail, men built like brick walls with suppressed pistols already drawn, stepped into the doorway. Santos caught Danny by the throat, slamming him onto the polished copper-island counter. Pans rattled and crashed to the floor.
"Please! Please! It wasn't my idea! They have my sister!" Danny screamed, his face pressed against the cold stone. "They told me if I didn't drop the vial into the machine, they’d send her back to me in pieces!"
Alessandro walked over, his footsteps echoing with terrifying calmness. He looked down at the weeping cook. "Who is 'they', Danny? Give me a name, and maybe you survive the morning."
"I don't know! I swear! I only got a call from a burner phone. A man with a deep voice... he knew the security codes for the outer gates. He knew the shifts! He’s inside this house, Mr. Duca! The traitor is already inside your walls!"

Alessandro's eyes darkened. A mole. Someone high enough to know the guards' rotations and give a new cook access to the estate. He looked back at Sophia and little Emma, who was hiding her face in her mother's uniform, crying softly.
"Santos, take Danny to the basement. Keep him alive. Marco, lock down the estate. Nobody leaves. Not the guards, not the staff, not my own cousins. Nobody." Alessandro turned to Sophia, his expression softening just a fraction. "Sophia. You and your daughter are coming with me to the study. You just saved my life. Now, we find out who killed your husband."
