Chapter 2 - Secrets in the Study

The study was a sanctuary of dark mahogany, leather-bound books, and bulletproof glass. Alessandro sat behind his massive desk, while Sophia sat on the leather sofa, holding a now-calm Emma, who was sipping a glass of warm milk brought in by Alessandro’s most trusted personal bodyguard, Marco.

"Tell me about Hector," Alessandro commanded gently, leaning forward. "He worked for me?"

"He was a mechanic in your private garage, sir," Sophia said, her voice shaking but resolute. "He loved his job. He took care of your armored vehicles. But a month before he died, he became paranoid. He kept saying he saw something he shouldn't have in the warehouse logs. Then he got sick. The doctor your family recommended—Doctor Vane—gave him those pills. He died three days later."

Alessandro’s jaw tightened. Doctor Vane was the Duca family physician. He had access to everything, including medical records, poisons, and the inner circle.

"Marco," Alessandro called out. "Where is Doctor Vane right now?"

"He's currently at his private clinic downtown, boss. Should I fetch him?"

"No. If he knows Danny failed, he’ll run. Take a team and bring him here quietly. If he resists, break his legs, but bring him back breathing." Alessandro stood up and walked over to Emma. He knelt again, looking at the little girl who had inadvertently altered the fate of the Duca empire. "Emma. You are a very brave girl. Do you know that?"

Emma blinked, clutching her stuffed rabbit. "Is the bad smell gone?"

"It’s gone. And I promise you, the people who made that smell will never hurt anyone ever again." Alessandro looked up at Sophia. "From this moment on, you and Emma live in the main villa. You are no longer staff. You are under my personal protection. Whoever did this tried to wipe out your husband because he knew too much, and now they’ve tried to wipe me out."

Suddenly, the phone on Alessandro's desk rang. It was the secure line. He picked it up.

"Duca," he answered.

"Alessandro, my boy," a rich, older voice came through the speaker. It was Uncle Matteo, his father’s brother and the consigliere of the family. "I heard there’s a lockdown at the estate. Is everything alright? The capos are getting nervous. We have a meeting with the Bratva tonight."

"A minor security glitch, Uncle," Alessandro said, his voice completely devoid of emotion. "A servant made a mistake. The lockdown will be lifted shortly. I will see you at the meeting."

"Good. Don't let the little things distract you. The family needs its strength."

Alessandro hung up the phone. His eyes narrowed into slits. He hadn't told anyone outside the kitchen about the lockdown yet. The news hadn't left the estate walls. How did Uncle Matteo know?

The web of betrayal was unraveling, and it was drawing closer to his own bloodline.
