Chapter 9 - The Return to the Mansion

When Allesandro returned to New York two days later, the atmosphere at the Moretti estate had changed completely.
The heavy, suffocating paranoia that had hung over the mahogany hallways for years had dissolved. The house felt lighter, sunlit, and clean.
Victoria met him in the grand foyer as he walked through the front doors. She wore a stunning ivory dress, her dark hair pinned back elegantly. She stepped into his arms without hesitation, wrapping her arms around his neck as he pulled her tight against him.
"How is Lily?" Victoria asked softly against his cheek.
"She’s thriving," Allesandro smiled, kissing her forehead gently. "She’ll be starting school in Geneva this autumn."
"And Vance?"
"Sentenced yesterday morning," Allesandro reported, walking with her arm-in-arm toward the sunny parlor overlooking the gardens. "Twenty-five years in maximum security without parole. His entire task force has been disbanded, and the Justice Department has formally closed all active investigations into our family."
Victoria sat down on the velvet sofa, looking up at him with deep affection. "You changed everything, Allesandro. You turned a betrayal into a complete victory. But more than that... you saved a family."
Allesandro walked over to the marble fireplace, where a newly framed photograph sat on the mantelpiece.
It was a picture taken on the balcony in Geneva: little Lily, smiling brightly, holding a brand-new, beautifully crafted teddy bear—one without cameras, without wires, and without secrets.
"I spent twenty years building an empire out of fear, Victoria," Allesandro said, looking at the photograph, feeling a profound sense of peace settle into his soul for the first time in his life. "I thought fear was the only thing that could protect the people I cared about. But I was wrong."
He turned to face Victoria, stepping toward her, extending his hand. "Loyalty isn't built on fear. It's built on protecting those who cannot protect themselves."

She took his hand, standing up to press her lips gently against his. "So, what happens now, Mr. Moretti?"
"Now," Allesandro smiled, his eyes shining with light, "we live."
