Chapter 5 - The Trap Springs

At 6:12 AM, the nursery was bathed in the soft, gray light of early morning.

Lily was downstairs in the kitchen with her mother, eating warm oatmeal while Elena tried her best to hide her swollen, red eyes.

Upstairs, Victoria walked into the quiet nursery. She wore a simple silk blouse and trousers. Her hands didn't shake as she approached the heavy oak bookshelf on the north wall. With practiced, deliberate movements, she pulled three leather-bound encyclopedias, revealing the brass keyhole of the hidden wall safe behind them.

From her cardigan pocket, she pulled a black leather notebook—the poisoned ledger Leo had crafted just hours prior. She placed it inside the safe, turned the lock, replaced the books, and walked out of the room without ever looking directly at the shelf where Daisy sat.

In a darkened control van parked three blocks away from the estate, Special Agent Richard Vance leaned close to his high-definition monitor, a thermos of stale coffee clutched in his hand.

"Did you catch that?" Vance asked eagerly, a predatory smile breaking across his weather-beaten face.

"Clear as day, Boss," his technician replied, zooming in on the recorded frame. "She just stashed the primary manifest. The timestamp on the transmission is rock solid. We've got him. We've finally got Russo on federal racketeering and illegal arms importation."

Vance slapped his hand against the desk in triumph. "Ten years of chasing this ghost. Assemble the tactical units. We hit Pier 42 at midnight when the cargo ship docks. I want swat teams on every crane, snipers on the warehouse roof, and federal marshals covering every land exit."

"What about the informant in the house?" the tech asked. "The maid?"

Vance shrugged indifferently, taking a sip of his coffee. "Once we execute the raid, she’s useless. Cut her off. Deny any agreement regarding her kid's medical bills. If she tries to talk, remind her that assisting a federal wiretap without a warrant makes her an unindicted co-conspirator. She'll keep her mouth shut."

The technician nodded, pulling up the operation parameters for Pier 42.

Neither of them noticed the small, green indicator light flickering on the van’s secondary radio receiver—a silent, high-frequency signal intercepting their entire conversation, routing it straight back to the basement of the Moretti mansion.

In his study, Allesandro took off his headphones, a cold, ruthless smile touching his lips. He looked at Marco, who was adjusting his shoulder holster.

"Vance just sealed his own fate," Allesandro said. "He took the bait. He’s moving all tactical personnel to the docks."

"The Jersey City office will be wide open," Marco confirmed.

"Get the cars ready," Allesandro ordered. "We leave in twenty minutes."
