Chapter 4 - The Shadow Game

By three in the morning, the estate had transformed into a war room. Leo had re-assembled the camera inside Daisy’s fabric shell, carefully re-stitching the back seam so it appeared untouched. The doll was placed back on the shelf in Lily’s nursery, facing the doorway.
In the study below, Allesandro sat behind his massive mahogany desk, sipping espresso. Beside him stood Marco, Victoria, and Leo.
"Vance expects the next data transmission at six fifteen tomorrow morning," Leo explained, pointing to his laptop monitor. "If the signal drops or the camera goes dark, he’ll know the bug was compromised. He’ll execute a emergency search warrant within two hours to recover the physical evidence before we can destroy it."
"Then we won't let the signal drop," Allesandro said, leaning forward. "We give him exactly what he wants to see. But not what is real."
"What do you mean, Boss?" Marco asked.
Allesandro looked at Victoria. "Victoria, you are going to go into that nursery tomorrow morning at five forty-five. You are going to open the wall panel behind the bookshelf—the one where we keep the old land titles—and you are going to place a specific ledger inside."
Victoria blinked. "What ledger?"
"Leo, I want you to create a deep-fake digital ledger," Allesandro commanded. "Make it look like an active offshore shipping manifest linking my family to an illegal arms shipment arriving at Pier 42 tomorrow night. Use my actual digital signature, but embed a subtle cryptographic timestamp error deep in the file metadata—something that proves it was generated tonight on an external network."
Leo’s eyes lit up with professional delight. "A poison pill. If Vance uses that ledger in court to get an arrest warrant, any decent judge will throw out the entire case once we reveal the metadata was fabricated during an illegal wiretap!"
"Precisely," Allesandro smiled darkly. "Vance will see Victoria placing the ledger on the camera feed at six fifteen. He will think he finally has the smoking gun he's spent ten years hunting for. He will move his entire team to Pier 42 tomorrow night to catch the fake shipment."
"And while he’s at Pier 42?" Marco asked, a grin spreading across his scarred face.
"While he’s waiting at an empty dock in the rain," Allesandro said, his voice dropping into a dangerous whisper, "I will be visiting his private office in Jersey City to collect every file he holds on my family, on Elena, and on Lily."
Victoria stepped forward, looking down at her hands. "Allesandro... I'm sorry. For doubting you. For getting angry."
Allesandro looked at his fiancée. The distrust that had hovered between them for two years had burned away in the crucible of the night's revelation. "You didn't betray me, Victoria. But you need to be strong tomorrow. Vance will be watching you through that doll's eye. Every movement must be perfect."

Victoria lifted her chin, her eyes flashing with renewed determination. "I brought that doll into this house to make a little girl happy. I won't let a Fed turn my gift into a disgrace. I'll play my part."
"Good," Allesandro said. He turned toward the window, watching the first light of dawn bleeding over the Manhattan skyline. "Let the game begin."
