Chapter 8 - The Swiss Sanctuary

Three weeks later.
The morning sun over Lake Geneva was brilliant and clear, reflecting off the mirror-like surface of the blue water, painting the snow-capped Alps in shades of rose and gold.
On the private balcony of the world-renowned St. Jude Pediatric Research Clinic, Elena Bennett sat in a comfortable plush chair, holding a warm cup of coffee. For the first time in eight months, the dark circles beneath her eyes were gone. The constant, crushing weight that had sat on her chest had finally lifted.
Inside the glass-walled room behind her, Lily was sitting on a bed, laughing merrily as a team of world-class Swiss specialists checked her vital signs. The experimental gene therapy treatment—fully funded in perpetuity by the Moretti Foundation—had been administered four days prior. The early test results showed a ninety-eight percent reduction in her neural inflammation markers. She was going to live a long, healthy, normal life.
The balcony door slid open, and Allesandro walked out, dressed in an elegant charcoal grey suit, his hands resting casually in his pockets.
Elena immediately stood up, setting her coffee down. "Mr. Moretti," she said, her eyes filling with tears of profound gratitude. "The doctors... they just gave me the morning update. They said Lily’s response to the therapy is a miracle."
"It's not a miracle, Elena," Allesandro said with a quiet smile, looking out over the pristine lake. "It's modern medicine. And it's what she deserved from the very beginning."
Elena looked down, her voice trembling. "I still don't understand... why you did all this for us. After what I did. I put your home in danger. I let those people spy on you."
Allesandro turned to look at her, his dark eyes firm yet filled with a deep, quiet warmth. "You fought for your daughter, Elena. A parent who won't break the world to save their child isn't a parent at all. I didn't punish you because I knew that under the same circumstances, I would have burned the city to the ground."
He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a clean white envelope, placing it on the table.
"What's this?" she asked.
"Deeds to a villa three miles down the coast," Allesandro explained. "And a trust fund registered in Zurich under Lily’s name. You and your daughter are free, Elena. You don't have to work for me anymore. You don't have to live in the shadow of my world. You can give her a normal, beautiful life here in Switzerland."

Elena stared at the envelope, then looked up at Allesandro, her mouth opening in shock. "Mr. Moretti... I... I can never repay you for this. Never."
"You don't owe me anything," Allesandro said softly. "Just make sure she grows up happy."
