Chapter 7 - The Master Stroke

By 2:00 AM, Agent Vance burst into his Jersey City office building, soaked with rain, his face red with fury. He rushed up the stairs, drawing his weapon, expecting a crime scene.
Instead, his office was completely intact—except for his desk.
Sitting on his leather office chair was a single physical folder, bound in red ribbon.
Vance approached the desk slowly, his heart hammering against his ribs. He opened the folder with trembling fingers.
Inside was a complete dossier of his own illegal activities over the past five years: unauthorized surveillance warrants, black-market extortion of witnesses, misallocated department funds, and internal emails detailing his deliberate sabotage of a four-year-old child's medical treatment.
Pinned to the top of the stack was an official court summons, along with a confirmation letter from the Department of Justice Internal Affairs Division.
Attached to the back of the folder was a small USB drive containing a recorded message.
Vance plugged the drive into his personal laptop—which had been completely wiped clean of all data—and hit play.
Allesandro Moretti’s smooth, gravelly voice echoed through the empty office speakers:
"Agent Vance. By the time you listen to this, every news outlet in New York, the Director of the FBI, and the state ethics committee will have received an unredacted copy of these files. You tried to use an innocent child as a pawn in your obsession to destroy me. You breached my home, violated the sanctity of a toddler's nursery, and condemned a sick girl to suffer for your own ambition."
The recording paused for a brief beat before continuing:
"I built my empire on power and fear, Vance. But you built your career on cowardice. The marshals will be arriving at your office in twenty minutes to arrest you for federal corruption and civil rights violations. Do not bother running. My men are watching every exit."
May you like
Vance sank into his chair, the paper slipping from his lifeless fingers. He looked out the window. Down on the street, two black SUVs were idling quietly in the rain, their dark tinted windows reflecting the streetlights.
He was finished.
