The Broken Pact

Inside the maximum-security visitor pavilion at Rikers Island, Julian sat opposite me behind a thick wall of reinforced plexiglass. The orange prison jumpsuit had completely replaced the immaculate white lab coat he once wore so proudly. He had grown thin, but his eyes still carried the arrogant smirk of a man who believed he held a winning card.

"Evelyn," he laughed, pressing his palm flat against the glass divider. "You think you've locked down my world? You forgot to check the birthright. The child in Claire’s womb carries my bloodline. Under state family laws, I retain full legal guardianship options the moment that baby is born. I will sue you from this cell. I will force Claire to bring that infant here to visit me every single month."

I stared at him, a wave of absolute disgust rising in my chest. He still thought this war followed the rules of his petty society games.

"You actually believe that child belongs to you, Julian?" I spoke into the receiver.

Julian froze, his practiced smile instantly dying on his face. "What are you talking about? Claire would never—"

"Claire never betrayed you, that's correct," I cut him off, my words slicing through the static line like a razor. "But the biological records from the Rosehaven Fertility Center—which my team seized at dawn—tell a completely different story. You've been sterile since your accident at twenty-four, Julian. The child Claire is carrying is the result of an anonymous donor profile that you secretly swapped into the procedure to hide your own medical impotence from the Reed family estate."

Julian’s face turned an ash-gray color, his mouth parting slightly but no sound coming out. He realized that the single greatest secret of his life—the lie he used to secure his position as the sole family heir—was now entirely in my hands.
