The Black Audit

At 9:00 a.m. on Monday, the corporate headquarters of Reed Medical Holdings was completely paralyzed by forty federal auditors and my private financial fraud investigators. The entire server infrastructure was disconnected from the network.

Patricia Reed, Julian’s mother, materialized in the grand lobby wearing an expensive fur coat, though her face was twisted in sheer panic. She tried to push past the security guards to storm the executive office where I sat.

"Evelyn Wren!" she screamed, her diamond-ringed fingers trembling as she pointed at my face. "You are destroying my family's legacy! Julian is a medical prodigy. What happened between him and Claire was a minor marital dispute! You dramatic women are pathetic, turning a simple slap into a federal case!"

I slowly spun my leather executive chair around, looking at the woman who had stood by and watched her son abuse my daughter, calling it "family discipline."

"A minor dispute?" I asked, my voice dropping to a register so low it made her defense attorneys take a step back. "The encrypted medical files we recovered from Julian's private drive show he has been prescribing high-dosage synthetic sedatives to Claire for four months, specifically to make her appear mentally unstable ahead of the divorce proceedings."

I threw a thick manila file onto the glass table.

"And these are the wire transfer invoices sent directly to an offshore account in your name, Patricia. You received two million dollars for illegally selling VIP patient metrics from this hospital. Julian isn't going to prison alone. You're going to be his cellmate."
