The Threat in the Mailbox

By the third day in Aspen, our sanctuary was breached by a single handwritten letter delivered directly to the estate's secure physical drop-box. There was no postal stamp, meaning someone had physically bypassed our outer perimeter to place it there.

Inside, cut-and-pasted letters from corporate financial journals formed a single sentence: “Seven million dollars can’t buy a pulse. Drop the charges, Evelyn, or Claire’s child will never see its first birthday.”

Harrison stood by the dining table, his face uncharacteristically dark. "We underestimated Julian's underground network. He isn't just a prominent surgeon; he has deep logistical ties to medical money-laundering syndicates operating out of New York."

I took the letter, holding it over the flame of my St. Dupont lighter until it curled into black ash inside a crystal tray.

"He thinks I'm just a wealthy, fragile mother trying to throw money at a crisis?" I asked, a cold, sharp smile touching my lips. "Harrison, activate Operation 'Total Liquidation.' I don't just want Julian to rot in a federal cell. I want every single person who ever pocketed a dirty dollar from him brought down to their knees."

"Where do we begin, ma'am?"

"With his private practice. Let's show them what a forensic audit from Wren Capital actually looks like."
