Chapter 1: The Shield of Justice

Chapter 1: The Shield of Justice
The heavy silence in the VIP recovery suite was suffocating. The head of hospital security, a burly man named Marcus, stared at his tablet, his eyes darting between the screen and the trembling woman standing in the center of the room. Evelyn Vance, who had just been shouting hysterically about Julia’s alleged "mental instability," froze. The haughty, aristocratic sneer on her face cracked.
"What did you just say?" Evelyn demanded, her voice dropping an octave, attempting to weaponize her usual authority. "Do you know who I am? I am Evelyn Vance. My family funds half of this hospital’s pediatric wing!"
Marcus didn't flinch. He looked past Evelyn and focused entirely on Julia, who was fiercely cradling both of her newborn twins against her chest, her trembling hands defying her physical exhaustion.
"I said," Marcus repeated, his voice echoing with profound respect, "Judge Vance. Chief Magistrate Julia Vance of the Federal District Court." He turned the tablet around, displaying a verified profile from the Department of Justice database. The photo showed Julia in her judicial robes—powerful, commanding, and unyielding. A stark contrast to the pale, sweat-drenched woman in the hospital gown, but the piercing, intelligent eyes were unmistakable.
Evelyn’s jaw dropped. She spun around to look at her husband, Arthur, and then at her son, Mark—Julia’s husband. Mark had his head buried in his hands, refusing to meet anyone's gaze.
"Mark..." Evelyn hissed, her voice laced with venom. "You told me she was just a penniless orphan! You told me she was a nobody from the countryside who trapped you into marriage!"
Mark whimpered, shrinking back into the corner of the room. "Mom... I—I didn't know. She never talked about her work at home. She said she was a civil servant... I thought she meant a low-level clerk!"
Julia let out a cold, breathless laugh, though tears of anger still stained her cheeks. She rocked her crying babies gently, her gaze locking onto her mother-in-law like a laser. "I grew up in an orphan care system, Evelyn. That part is true. But I put myself through Harvard Law. I climbed the ladder without a family legacy to carry me. And I kept my title private because I wanted to know if Mark loved me for me, or for the power my gavel holds." She looked at Mark, her heart breaking into a thousand pieces. "Clearly, he didn't love me at all."
Just hours ago, Julia had given birth via an emergency C-section. Her body was screaming in pain, but the maternal instinct pulsing through her veins gave her a terrifying strength.
The door burst open again, and this time, the hospital's Chief Executive Officer rushed in, flanked by two corporate lawyers. He took one look at Julia, then at the scattered adoption papers on the floor, and turned white as a sheet.
"Your Honor," the CEO stammered, bowing slightly. "I am deeply, deeply sorry for this egregious security breach. We received a report of a disturbance..."
"A disturbance?" Julia whispered, her voice cutting through the room like a scalpel. "This woman, Evelyn Vance, entered my private recovery suite with forged or coerced legal documents. She attempted to forcefully abduct one of my newborn twins under the false pretense that I am mentally unfit. And my husband, Mark Vance, sat there as an accomplice."
"That's a lie!" Evelyn shrieked, her composure completely shattering. "The Vance bloodline cannot be tainted by a nameless woman! Mark told me one of those children doesn't look like him! We only want what is rightfully ours!"
"Silence!" Marcus, the security guard, barked, stepping between Evelyn and Julia's bed. "Ma'am, you are on camera attempting to physically alter the placement of medical bassinets and screaming false accusations. You are trespassing in a restricted VIP wing."
Julia looked down at her twins—a boy and a girl, beautiful, fragile, and utterly innocent. She knew the Vance family was obsessed with status and wealth. Evelyn had always hated her, but Julia never imagined they would stoop to kidnapping. The adoption papers on the floor were drafted by the Vance Family Trust, aiming to sign over the rights of the baby girl to Mark's barren sister, leaving Julia with only the boy—or perhaps nothing at all if they successfully committed her to an asylum.
"Marcus," Julia said clearly, her judicial authority taking over. "I want these two individuals removed from this premises immediately. Furthermore, I am requesting a formal police report for attempted child abduction, harassment, and conspiracy."
"You wouldn't dare," Evelyn snarled, though a tremor of fear finally crept into her eyes. "The Vance name will ruin you in this city!"
May you like
"Evelyn," Julia said, a dangerous smile touching her lips despite her pain. "You rule high society. I rule the courtroom. Let's see whose gavel hits harder."
As security forced Evelyn and a weeping Mark out of the room, the door clicked shut, leaving Julia alone with her babies and the medical staff. She collapsed back onto the pillows, her strength evaporating, but her resolve hardening into pure steel. The war had just begun.
