Chapter 7 - The Shadow Grows

Our peaceful routine was shattered three weeks later by a unexpected arrival.

I was in the middle of a video conference with my European partners when Mrs. Gable knocked urgently on my office door.

"Vance, you need to come outside," she said, her face pale. "There are reporters at the gate."

I rushed down to the entrance. Outside the tall iron security gates stood three news vans and a crowd of reporters holding microphones.

Standing right at the gate, speaking directly into a news camera, was my late wife’s sister, Victoria Sterling, alongside Julian.

"My family is deeply concerned for the safety of my late sister's twin infants," Victoria was crying dramatically into a reporter's microphone. "Vance Caruso has cut our family off, locked himself in that mansion, and hired an unvetted, unlicensed young woman who is living in the house with him under mysterious circumstances!"

I pushed open the side gate, stepping out onto the driveway with my security detail right behind me.

"Turn those cameras off!" I barked, my voice echoing across the driveway.

The reporters swarmed toward me, shouting questions simultaneously.

"Mr. Caruso, is it true you're suffering from a nervous breakdown?" "Is the new nanny living with you as a romantic partner?" "Are you denying the Sterling family access to Clara's children?"

Julian stepped forward, a smug grin plastered across his face. "We just want what's best for the girls, Vance. The public deserves to know if a grieving billionaire is endangering his children with an unqualified woman."

Before I could lose my temper and hit him, Elise stepped out of the estate entrance. She wasn't hiding. She wore a sharp blazer, her hair neatly styled, holding a tablet in her hand.

She walked straight to the press line, standing beside me with calm, dignified composure.

"My name is Elise Navarro," she announced, her clear voice carrying over the noise of the crowd. "I am a certified pediatric specialist holding a master's degree in child development from Columbia University. My employment contract with the Caruso estate is fully registered, vetted, and supervised by independent family services."

She turned directly to the camera lenses.

"What Mr. Julian Sterling and Miss Victoria Sterling are doing today isn't an act of love for their nieces," Elise said, her voice dropping with powerful authority. "It is an attempt to manipulate public opinion to secure financial leverage over the Sterling-Caruso trust fund. They haven't asked to visit the children once in thirty days. Their only requests have been for financial audits."

The reporters gasped, instantly turning their cameras toward Julian and Victoria, whose faces drained of color.

"Is this true, Mr. Sterling?" a reporter pressed. "Have you requested financial audits instead of visitation?"

Julian stammered, completely caught off guard. "This... this is an outrage! Turn those cameras off!"

"We will see you in court, Vance," Victoria spat, grabbing her brother's arm as they retreated into their town car, fleeing the swarm of press.

I turned to Elise, my chest swelling with a feeling so powerful it took my breath away. She had stood by me again, shielding my name and my family without hesitation.

"Thank you," I murmured as we walked back inside the safety of the gates.

Elise looked at me, her cheeks flushing slightly. "We're a team, Vance. Remember?"
