Chapter 4 - The Unexpected Shield

My blood ran ice-cold. "You are out of your mind if you think you're taking my daughters out of this house."

"I have two security officers waiting outside in the limousine, Vance," Julian sneered, stepping closer. "You're a grieving wreck. You can barely keep yourself together, let alone raise twin infants. You're losing your mind in this mausoleum."

Before I could answer, a clear, confident voice cut through the tense standoff.

"He isn't losing his mind, Mr. Sterling. And you're not taking those girls anywhere."

Elise walked down the hallway, wearing her coat and carrying her small suitcase. She set her bag down near the stairs and stepped directly between Julian and me.

Julian blinked, looking her up and down with condescending disdain. "And who are you supposed to be? The latest nanny about to quit?"

"I am the head of pediatric domestic care for the Caruso estate," Elise said, her tone sharp and authoritative. "And if you checked your facts before storming in here with fraudulent legal threats, you’d know that your claims are completely false."

Julian chuckled mockingly. "Is that so? I have sworn statements from the previous agency nannies—"

"Previous nannies who were dismissed for failing to adhere to strict developmental standards," Elise interrupted seamlessly, pulling a thick leather notebook from her bag. "I have kept a detailed, hourly log of the children’s sleep cycles, weight gain, emotional milestones, and father-daughter bonding hours for the past fourteen days."

She flipped the notebook open, showing pages filled with neat handwriting, charts, and psychological observations.

"Mr. Caruso spends hours every day actively participating in their care," Elise lied smoothly, looking Julian straight in the eye without a flicker of hesitation. "The children are thriving, gaining weight, and emotionally secure. Any attempt to remove them from their biological father's care right now would cause severe psychological distress—and my testimony in court will ruin your petition before the judge even opens the file."

Julian’s smug smile faltered. He looked from Elise’s unyielding face to mine, realizing he had underestimated the strength of the household.

"This isn't over, Vance," Julian snarled, snatching his documents back from the table. "I'll have my investigators look into this 'nanny' of yours."

"Feel free," Elise replied coolly. "Make sure they spell my name right on the court summons: Elise Navarro. I look forward to testifying."

Julian glared at us for a moment longer before turning around and slamming the heavy oak front door behind him as he exited into the storm.

Silence returned to the foyer.

I stood there, staring at Elise in absolute shock. She stood near the stairs, breathing heavily, holding her leather logbook against her chest.

"Why did you do that?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper. "I just fired you."

Elise looked down at her muddy shoes, a soft, weary sigh escaping her lips. "Because I know what it looks like when a vulture tries to steal children from a grieving father. I might disagree with your methods, Vance... but I know you love those girls. And I wasn't going to let him break this family apart."
