Chapter 9 - A New Morning

Three days later, the sun rose over the Duca estate, painting the sky in brilliant hues of gold and amber. The storm had passed, leaving the vast gardens smelling fresh and alive.
The mansion was quiet now. The traitors had been permanently removed from the syndicate's affairs, the mercenary guards replaced by fierce loyalists, and order had been restored to Lorenzo's empire.
I stood in the grand foyer, holding a small duffel bag containing our few personal belongings. Emma stood beside me, wearing her clean blue coat, her one-eyed stuffed rabbit tucked securely under her arm.
I had packed our bags. The danger was over, Lorenzo was recovering under the care of top private physicians, and it was time for us to leave. A maid who knew too many secrets of a mafia lord couldn't simply go back to dusting shelves.
Footsteps echoed down the grand marble staircase.
I turned to see Lorenzo walking down toward us. He was wearing a dark, tailored suit, though he moved a bit slowly due to his healing ribs. His dark eyes were fixed entirely on me.
"Where do you think you're going, Clara?" he asked softly, stopping at the base of the stairs.
"Our agreement was until you were safe," I said, offering a small, sad smile. "You're safe now, Lorenzo. Your house is secure. Emma and I... we should get back to our life."
Lorenzo walked closer until he was standing just inches away from me. He reached down and gently touched the strap of the duffel bag on my shoulder, sliding it off and setting it on the floor.
"You think I'm going to let you go back to a tiny apartment and a struggling life after what you did for me?" Lorenzo asked, his tone rich with emotion. "You saved my life, Clara. Both of you."
"Lorenzo, I was just your maid—"
"You were never just my maid," he interrupted fiercely, his hand moving up to cup my cheek gently, his thumb brushing across my skin. "You are the strongest, bravest woman I have ever met. You stood between me and death. You protected your daughter, you faced armed men, and you patched my broken body together."
My breath caught in my throat at his touch, my heart racing for a completely different reason now.
"I don't want you cleaning my rooms, Clara," Lorenzo murmured, his eyes searching mine with intense tenderness. "I want you by my side. I want to give you and Emma the world. Security, happiness, a future where you never have to be afraid again."
Emma tugged on Lorenzo’s pant leg. He immediately looked down and crouched, ignoring the pull on his healing wound, to bring himself to eye level with my daughter.
"Mr. Boss Man?" Emma asked innocently. "Did your boo-boo get better?"
Lorenzo reached up and gently peeled off the cartoon bear bandage from his eyebrow, holding it in his palm like a prized treasure.
May you like
"It got completely better," Lorenzo said with a warm, genuine smile. "Because of you and your mama."
Emma beamed, wrapping her small arms around his neck. Lorenzo held her gently, looking up at me with an expression of profound warmth and hope.
