Chapter 5 - A Maid's Vengeance

"What are you doing up here, sweetheart?" Gianni sneered, stepping closer, his shoes crunching on the dusty floorboards. "Running away? Or were you playing with things you shouldn't touch?"

My heart was hammering against my ribs, but a strange, icy calm washed over me. I had survived my husband’s sudden death, years of backbreaking labor, and the absolute terror of keeping my daughter safe. I wasn't going to die in a dusty attic at the hands of a thug.

"I was looking for extra blankets," I said, my voice steady, putting a slight tremor into my hands to play the weak, frightened servant. "There was shooting... I was scared..."

"Liar," Gianni growled, glancing at the newly thrown junction switch. "You’re working for him, aren't you? Where is Lorenzo?"

"I don't know!" I cried, backing up until my spine hit the heavy oak frame of a tall antique mirror resting against the wall. "Please! I have a toddler! Just let us leave!"

Gianni raised the gun higher, a cold, ruthless smile spreading across his face. "No loose ends. Marco’s orders."

As his finger tightened on the trigger, I didn't scream. I didn't freeze.

I grabbed the heavy frame of the six-foot mirror and slammed my weight forward, pushing it down directly onto him.

The heavy glass smashed into his face and shoulders with a deafening crash. Gianni roared in shock and pain as hundreds of pounds of wood and shattered glass collapsed over him, sending his gun skittering across the floorboards into the darkness.

Without missing a beat, I darted forward, picked up the heavy brass spanner from the floor, and swung it with all the strength in my arms straight into his temple.

Gianni went limp with a dull thud.

Gasping for air, my hands trembling violently, I kicked his weapon under a stack of heavy crates where he wouldn't easily find it if he woke up. Then I grabbed his tactical flashlight, stripped the master keycard from his belt, and ran back toward the hidden servant passage.

I descended the stairs at a breakneck speed, my heart pounding in my ears. I reached the potting shed, slipped into the dark stairwell, and slammed the heavy oak floorboard back into place.

When I reached the bottom of the bunker stairs, Lorenzo was standing upright—leaning heavily against the doorframe, a heavy iron pipe gripped in his hand, his eyes wide with desperate worry.

When he saw me, covered in dust and glass fragments but unhurt, the iron pipe clattered to the concrete floor.

"Clara," he breathed, reaching out and pulling me into a sudden, fierce embrace.

The heat of his body and the strength in his arms caught me completely off guard. For a second, I let myself lean into him, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of his heartbeat beneath my cheek.

"The signal is sent," I whispered against his shoulder. "And Gianni won't be bothering us for a while."

Lorenzo pulled back slightly, looking at me with a mixture of awe and absolute fascination. "You are an extraordinary woman, Clara."

"Mama!" Emma squeaked, running over and wrapping her small arms around my legs. "Did you bring Mr. Bear's friend?"

I knelt down and pulled my daughter close, kissing her curls. "No, baby. But help is on the way."
