Chapter 10 - A Promised Future

One year later.
The grand gardens of the Duca estate were blooming with vivid red roses and sweet-scented jasmine. The dark clouds of betrayal and fear that had once hung over this house were completely gone, replaced by laughter, sunlight, and life.
I sat on a wrought-iron bench on the sunny west terrace, drinking a hot cup of tea. I wore an elegant cream-colored dress—a stark contrast to the dark maid's uniform I had worn for years. Next month, I was enrolling in the university’s advanced surgical nursing program, fully funded by the Duca foundation.
Across the lush green lawn, the sound of happy giggles echoed through the air.
Lorenzo—looking healthy, powerful, and completely rejuvenated—was chasing four-year-old Emma through the manicured grass. Emma was wearing a bright yellow dress, roaring like a little lion as Lorenzo pretended to be terrified, ducking behind the hedge statues.
"He's going to ruin that Italian suit," Capo Valenti said with a quiet chuckle, stepping onto the terrace holding a clipboard.
"Let him," I smiled, watching the man who controlled half the city's enterprise tumble onto the grass just to make my daughter laugh. "It suits him."
Valenti smiled warmly at me. "The house has never been warmer, Clara. You brought light back into Don Duca's life."
When the games were over, Lorenzo picked Emma up, resting her comfortably on his hip, and walked back up the terrace steps toward me. Emma was holding her plush rabbit—which now had a brand-new shiny button eye that Lorenzo had personally sourced and sewn on himself.
"Mama!" Emma giggled. "Lorenzo fell in the flowers!"
"I saw," I laughed, wiping a smudge of dirt from Lorenzo’s cheek with my thumb. "You're terrible at dodging, Don Lorenzo."
"I let her win," Lorenzo murmured, placing Emma gently on the plush outdoor sofa where she immediately began playing with her toys.
Lorenzo wrapped his arms around my waist from behind, pulling me close against his chest. I leaned back into his strength, placing my hands over his. Beneath my palms, his heart beat strong, steady, and full of life.
He leaned down, kissing the side of my neck before resting his chin on my shoulder.
"Have I told you today how much I love you?" he whispered softly in my ear.
"Not in the last hour," I teased softly, turning my head to meet his dark, loving eyes.
May you like
"Then I'll say it every hour for the rest of our lives," Lorenzo declared, kissing my lips with a deep, passionate warmth that made the rest of the world melt away.
We had faced the deepest shadows together—a rain-soaked night, a hidden safe room, and a dangerous web of betrayal. But out of that dark storm, we had built a family, a home, and a love that was unbreakable.
