Chapter 3 - The Shoebox of Lies

Dominic felt a cold rage settle into his bones—not directed at Clara, but at the memory of his late father, a man who had manipulated every piece of his life.
He walked over to the bed and sat on the edge of the mattress. The heavy leather of his coat creaked in the quiet room. He reached out, his large, warm hand gently cupping Clara’s thin cheek. The touch was so tender, so full of longing, that Clara burst into quiet, trembling tears.
"My father died two years ago, Clara," Dominic said softly. "He can't hurt you anymore. No one can."
Clara looked down at the dusty shoebox resting on her nightstand. She reached for it with shaking fingers and untied the faded ribbon. She lifted the lid, revealing dozens of sealed, stamped envelopes, all addressed to Dominic Moretti at his private address.
"I wrote to you," Clara wept, holding out the box. "Every single month after I left. I wrote to tell you about Lily. I wrote to ask for help when she was born. Every single letter came back unopened, stamped with your corporate seal."
Dominic picked up one of the envelopes. He recognized the red ink stamp on the back—a personal seal used exclusively by the former head of Human Resources, Arthur Pendelton, his father's old confidant who still ran the HR department at Moretti Group.
It hadn't been an automated firing. Arthur Pendelton had seen Clara’s name on a routine payroll audit two weeks ago, realized Dominic’s lost love was still in the city, and personally issued the termination notice to push her out of Manhattan forever.
Dominic closed the shoebox, holding it tightly in his grip. He turned his head toward Marco, who stood silently by the bedroom door.
"Marco," Dominic spoke, his voice dropping into an icy tone that signaled war. "Find Arthur Pendelton. Bring him to the penthouse."
Dominic then turned back to Clara, sliding his arm beneath her back and lifting her effortlessly into his arms, blanket and all.

"Where are we going?" Clara asked, clutching his suit jacket.
"Home," Dominic said, looking down at her and then at Lily, who was beaming with a wide smile. "You're never coming back to this cold place again."
