Chapter 6 - Shadows in the Syndicate

The revelation sent shockwaves through the penthouse.
Giancarlo was eventually forced out by Matteo's security detail, but the damage was done. The truth hung between Cameron and Matteo like a physical wall.
"A half-sister," Cameron whispered late that night, sitting in the study while Matteo poured himself a glass of water, his hands visibly shaking. "All my life, I thought I was alone in the world. I thought no one shared my blood."
Matteo sat across from her, his intense dark eyes reading her face. "It explains why Leo reacted to you. It wasn't just your face, Cameron. You carry the same blood, the same voice cadence, the same warmth that Sofia had. He recognized his own kin."
"And what does this mean for you?" Cameron asked, looking at him carefully. "Does it make you hate me? Because I remind you of what you lost?"
Matteo stood up and walked over to her chair. He knelt down before her, taking her hands in his—a gesture so unexpectedly gentle that Cameron’s breath caught in her throat.
"I could never hate you, Cameron," Matteo said, his voice thick with emotion. "When you walked into this house, I was a dead man living in a tomb. You didn't just save my son; you brought life back into these walls. But you need to understand something: Giancarlo finding out about you puts you in mortal danger."
"Why?"
"Because under the Bellini family trust, Sofia was the primary heir. Since she died, her share was meant to go to Leo when he turns eighteen, with me as trustee," Matteo explained, his jaw setting tight. "If Giancarlo knows Sofia has a surviving sister born before her death, it could throw the entire inheritance into chaos. He will try to eliminate you, Cameron, just like he eliminated Sofia."

Cameron gasped. "You think... Giancarlo cut the brakes on Sofia's car?"
"I know he did," Matteo said, his eyes burning with cold vengeance. "And I will die before I let him hurt you or Leo."
