Chapter 4 - The Intruder

By the end of the week, an uneasy routine had developed within the penthouse.
Cameron stayed. Matteo paid her agency a fee that effectively bought out her contract, quadrupling her salary and appointing her as Leo's primary caregiver. Under Cameron’s calm, patient guidance, Leo transformed. The violent tantrums ceased. He began to eat full meals, laugh at cartoons, and play in the sunlit living room. He still called her Cameron most of the time, though in moments of tiredness or affection, "Mama" would slip out—a word that always caused a silent ripple of tension between Cameron and Matteo.
Matteo, too, began changing. The cold, ruthless billionaire who used to spend eighteen hours a day in his office started coming home early. He would sit quietly on the sofa, pretended to read financial reports while secretly watching Cameron read storybooks to Leo on the carpet.
However, the peace was shattered on a rainy Thursday afternoon.
Matteo was downtown attending an emergency board meeting. Cameron was in the nursery, helping Leo put together a wooden puzzle, when the main security alarm in the private elevator began to chime softly—a low, rhythmic warning signal.
Cameron stood up, telling Leo to stay in the room. She walked out into the grand hallway and froze.
The private elevator doors were open. Standing in the foyer was a tall, silver-haired man in an immaculate dark suit, flanked by two large men with heavy coats. The man possessed a striking, aristocratic face with cold blue eyes.
"Where is Matteo?" the silver-haired man asked, his voice smooth and laced with a thick Italian accent.
"He's not here," Cameron said, keeping her voice level despite the sudden dread pooling in her stomach. "This is a private residence. Who are you?"
The man stepped forward, taking off his leather gloves. As the hall lights caught his face, he locked eyes with Cameron.

He froze. His aristocratic composure shattered in an instant.
"Sofia?" the man gasped, his face draining of color. "Dio mio... how are you alive?"
