Chapter 7 - The Aftermath

Three days later.

The news of the Marino family's sudden, catastrophic legal collapse dominated every major newspaper in Chicago. Salvatore Marino was held without bail on federal corruption charges, his empire dismantled piece by piece by federal prosecutors using anonymous financial audits delivered to their offices.

The engagement between Gabriel Costa and Isabella Marino was officially canceled, cited as an "amicable dissolution due to personal differences."

At Costa Holdings, the forty-eighth floor was completely quiet.

Clara stood inside Gabriel’s corner office, looking out at the sun breaking through the blue skies over Lake Michigan. The fog had cleared, leaving the city bright, crisp, and clean.

She was wearing a simple white sweater and jeans. She was no longer an employee. Her resignation had been formally processed, her accounts restored, her passport returned. She was entirely free.

The heavy oak doors opened, and Gabriel walked in.

He looked different. The cold, impenetrable armor he had worn for four years was gone. He wore a simple dark sweater, his dark hair unstyled, his eyes soft and quiet as he looked at her standing by the window.

"Your flight to London leaves at six," Gabriel said softly, standing ten feet away, respecting her space. "Arthur has prepared a private driver to take you to O'Hare whenever you are ready."

Clara turned around, looking at him. "Thank you, Gabriel."

Gabriel reached into his pocket and pulled out a small leather document case, holding it out toward her.

"What is this?" Clara asked, taking it.

"A deed," Gabriel said smoothly. "To a small medical research foundation in London. I purchased it yesterday under your name. It needs a chief executive officer who knows how to manage complex organizations without dealing with criminals."

Clara looked up, her dark eyes filling with soft warmth. "Gabriel... you don't have to buy me a foundation."

"I’m not buying you anything, Clara," Gabriel said, taking two steps toward her, his voice trembling slightly. "I’m giving you what you deserved four years ago. A legitimate life. A clean career. Freedom from me."

He looked down at his shoes, taking a deep, shuddering breath.

"I almost killed you, Clara," Gabriel whispered, his voice thick with guilt. "My arrogance, my obsession with keeping you close to me... it almost cost you your life on 31st Street. You were right. I was a monster who treated you like an asset."

Clara set the leather folder down on the mahogany desk. She walked slowly across the room, stopping directly in front of Gabriel.

She reached up, her soft fingers touching his jawline, forcing him to look down into her eyes.

"You were a man trying to survive in a world of monsters, Gabriel," Clara said softly. "And for four years, I watched you lose pieces of your humanity just to keep everyone around you safe."

"I lost you," Gabriel whispered, reaching up to lay his hand over hers against his cheek.

May you like

"You didn't lose me, Gabriel," Clara smiled softly, tears glistening in her eyes. "You just spent four years refusing to ask for what you actually wanted."

Gabriel stared at her, his heart hammering against his ribs. "What I want... is you, Clara. Not as an assistant. Not as a secret in my office. I want to build a real life with you. In the daylight."
