Chapter 9 - The Homecoming

Two months after the court case, the day I had been praying for finally arrived.
Mark’s deployment ended.
I stood at the edge of the military airfield hangar, holding three-month-old Hazel in my arms. The afternoon sun was warm, and a gentle breeze blew across the tarmac as the massive transport plane rolled to a stop.
When the doors opened and the soldiers began filing out in their camouflage uniforms, my heart pounded in my chest. Then I saw him—tall, broad-shouldered, carrying his rucksack, scanning the crowd desperately.
"Mark!" I called out, waving my hand.
His eyes locked onto us, and a huge, radiant smile broke across his face. He broke into a jog, dropping his gear on the tarmac, and ran straight toward us.
He threw his arms around us, pulling me and Hazel into a warm, fierce embrace. Tears spilled down my cheeks as I felt his strength, his warmth, and the safety of his presence.
"You did it, Sarah," Mark whispered into my hair, holding us tight. "You fought for us. I'm so proud of you."
He pulled back slightly to look down at Hazel for the first time in person. His hands trembled as he gently touched her tiny, soft cheek. Hazel opened her bright blue eyes, looked up at him, and let out a tiny, sweet gurgle.

"Hey there, little girl," Mark said, his voice cracking with emotion. "I'm your daddy. I'm home now."
Standing there on the airfield, wrapped in my husband's arms while he held our daughter, the pain of the past few months melted away completely. The toxicity, the emotional blackmail, the court battles—it was all behind us. We were finally a real family, standing on a foundation built on love, respect, and truth.
