Chapter 2 - The Campaign of Lies

The war started less than twelve hours after Martha stormed out.

By the next morning, my phone was blowing up with calls and messages from distant relatives, old family friends, and acquaintances I hadn't spoken to in years. Martha and Penny had launched a full-scale smear campaign across social media. Penny had posted a tearful video on Facebook, claiming that I had abandoned my family in their time of need, cut off financial support for her children, and refused to let our mother see her newborn grandchild out of spite.

The comments section was a battleground. Relatives who had never contributed a single dime to my well-being were calling me heartless, cold, and arrogant. “How could a service member treat her own mother like this?” one comment read. “Money changed her,” another said.

Sitting at my kitchen table, nursing a cup of lukewarm tea while Hazel slept peacefully, I read through the messages. A year ago, this public humiliation would have crushed me. Today, it only sharpened my resolve.

My phone rang. The caller ID showed my husband Mark’s unit back at the base. I answered immediately.

"Sarah? Love, are you okay?" Mark's voice came through the line, heavy with concern and static. "I managed to get a ten-minute welfare call. I saw the posts online. What happened?"

Hearing Mark's voice brought tears to my eyes, but I forced my voice to stay steady. "Your mother-in-law showed up demanding money, screamed at me, and woke up Hazel. I threw her out and cut them off completely."

There was a pause on the line, followed by a long, deep sigh of relief from Mark. "Thank God. Sarah, I've been waiting for you to do this for five years. I hate that I'm not there to stand in front of you, but you did the right thing. Do not give them a single cent."

"I won't," I said firmly. "Mark, they're trying to ruin my reputation. They're contacting people in our hometown, saying I abused my power of attorney."

"Let them talk," Mark said grimly. "When I get back from this deployment in three months, we'll handle them together legally if we have to. Just focus on Hazel and yourself. Change your locks, set up security cameras, and block their numbers."

After hanging up with Mark, I took his advice. I hired a local locksmith to replace every lock on the doors and installed a ring camera at the front entry. I blocked Martha and Penny on all social media platforms and phone numbers. But deep down, I knew Martha. She was a woman who lived for control, and losing control over me meant she was going to escalate things far beyond dirty Facebook posts.
