Chapter 6 - The Day in Court

The local courthouse was cold and solemn on the morning of our hearing.

Martha and Penny arrived early, dressed in somber black outfits, clearly trying to play the roles of grieving, abandoned family members. They sat on the plaintiff's side of the courtroom, whispering frantically to a low-cost local attorney who looked visibly stressed.

I sat on the defense side with Captain Vance and my civilian attorney, dressed in my formal military service dress uniform. I sat tall, my spine straight, looking directly ahead, refusing to give Martha the satisfaction of seeing me flinch.

Judge Thomas, a stern woman in her late fifties, took the bench and called the case to order: Martha Miller v. Sarah Reed.

Martha's attorney stood up first, launching into a dramatic opening statement. He painted Martha as an aging, frail mother who had sacrificed her life to support her daughter's military career, only to be cast aside the moment Sarah had a baby of her own. He claimed that Sarah had made verbal agreements to provide monthly financial support and was now refusing to grant grandmotherly visitation rights out of malice.

When he finished, Judge Thomas looked down at her papers, unamused. "Captain Vance, your response?"

Captain Vance stood up calmly. "Your Honor, this lawsuit is an egregious abuse of the judicial system designed to continue a decade-long pattern of financial extortion and harassment against an active-duty military officer."

Captain Vance then walked over to the evidence table and presented the binder we had prepared.

"We have submitted full documentation showing that over the last ten years, Defendant Sarah Reed has gifted the Plaintiff over $140,000 under false pretenses," Captain Vance explained. "We have also provided financial records proving that Plaintiff Martha Miller possesses over $180,000 in undisclosed assets, completely invalidating any claim of filial necessity."

Judge Thomas flipped through the binder, her eyes widening slightly as she read the evidence.

"Furthermore," Captain Vance continued, "we have evidence showing that Co-Plaintiff Penny Miller used funds requested under the guise of emergency childcare for illegal online gambling and luxury purchases. Finally, we submit security footage showing Plaintiff Martha Miller forcibly entering Defendant's home and verbally assaulting her seven days after she gave birth alone while her husband was deployed."

Martha’s face went completely pale. Her attorney looked at her, shocked, clearly unaware of the mountain of evidence we possessed.

"Is this true?" Judge Thomas demanded, her voice sharp as steel, looking directly at Martha's attorney.

"Your... Your Honor," the attorney stammered, shuffling his papers frantically. "My client... we were not aware of these specific bank records..."
