Chapter 5 - Whispers of the Heart

The air between them grew thick with an unspoken electricity. Emma’s breath hitched as Lucian’s tall frame leaned in, his gaze dropping to her lips. For weeks, she had tried to remind herself of who he was—a dangerous, powerful mob boss whose life was surrounded by death. But when he looked at her like this, as if she were the only precious thing in a ruined world, every defense she had built simply melted away.

Before their lips could touch, a sharp knock at the door shattered the moment.

Victor stepped into the room, his face pale and grim. "Boss. We have a situation at the southern perimeter gate. A delivery truck was intercepted. It carried Moretti's mark."

Lucian’s entire demeanor shifted in an instant. The tenderness vanished, replaced instantly by the cold, lethal killer the city feared. He drew his hand back from Emma’s face, pulling a heavy gun from his shoulder holster.

"Go to your room, Emma. Lock the door," he commanded, his voice devoid of warmth.

"Lucian, wait—"

"Go!" he snapped, turning on his heel and sweeping out of the study with Victor trailing behind him.

Emma stood in the quiet room, her heart aching. She hated the violence that constantly surrounded him, but more than that, she hated the wall he immediately threw up between them the moment danger appeared.

The night descended into chaos. Gunfire echoed in the distant grounds of the estate. Emma stayed in Sophie’s room, wrapping herself around the sleeping child on the large bed, shielding her with her own body just as she had done in the bakery. Sophie woke briefly, her hands trembling as she signed into the darkness: Is Papa okay?

Papa is invincible, Emma signed back, pressing a kiss to the top of the girl's head. Go back to sleep, little princess.

It was nearly 4:00 AM when the sound of heavy boots approached the bedroom door. The handle turned, and Lucian stepped in. His white dress shirt was ruined, stained with soot and dark splashes of blood that weren't his own. His hair was disheveled, his eyes wild with adrenaline.

When he saw Emma sitting on the bed, holding Sophie safely in her arms, the tension drained from his shoulders. He walked over slowly, sinking onto the edge of the mattress.

"It is handled," he whispered, looking down at his hands. "The perimeter is secure."

Emma reached out with her free hand, gently taking his blood-stained fingers in hers. She didn't pull away from the blood, nor did she flinch from the reality of his world.

"You don't have to carry it all alone," she said softly.

Lucian looked at their intertwined hands—her soft, flour-dusted fingers clasped tightly around his rough, scarred fist.

"I have spent three years in the dark, Emma," Lucian whispered, his voice cracking slightly. "I thought I was dead inside. But every time you look at me without fear, every time you touch me... I feel like a man who is drowning and finally finding air."

He raised her hand to his lips, pressing a gentle, lingering kiss against her knuckles. "I will protect you from this world, Emma. Even if I have to burn all of New York to the ground."
