Chapter 10 - A Sweet Forever

One year later.

The morning sun broke over the harbor, illuminating the freshly painted storefront in downtown Brooklyn. The gilded letters on the window read: Emma’s Sweet Refuge.

It wasn't just any bakery. It was the safest, most famous bakery in New York. Stationed discreetly at the corner of the street were two sharp-looking men in dark suits, wearing earpieces, casually waving to the local neighborhood kids. The Moretti syndicate had been entirely dismantled, its remnants absorbed or banished, leaving the Vance empire as the undisputed, peaceful rulers of the city's underworld.

Inside, the bakery was filled with the divine scent of fresh brioche, chocolate croissants, and sweet cinnamon.

Emma stood behind the counter, wearing a clean white apron over a flattering burgundy dress that hugged her gorgeous curves. Her finger bore a massive, stunning cushion-cut diamond ring that caught the morning light.

The bell above the door chimed, and seven-year-old Sophie ran inside, wearing her private school uniform. She slid across the polished floor, dropping her backpack onto a table before bounding up to the counter.

Sophie raised her hands, signing rapidly with a bright, happy smile: Mama! Papa says if I eat my broccoli tonight, I can have three cinnamon rolls!

Emma laughed, signing back smoothly: Papa is lying to get you to eat vegetables. But I will give you two anyway.

Sophie giggled loudly—a sound that was no longer rare, but a daily joy in their lives. She took a warm cookie from the display and ran into the back room to do her homework.

Moments later, the front door opened again. Lucian Vance stepped inside. He wore a sharp three-piece navy suit, looking every bit the powerful mogul, but the moment his eyes landed on Emma, his cold demeanor melted into pure warmth.

He walked behind the counter, slipping his arms around Emma’s waist from behind, pulling her lush back against his chest. He rested his chin on her shoulder, pressing a soft kiss to her neck.

"Good morning, my love," he murmured in his low, gravelly voice.

"You're early," Emma smiled, leaning back against him, placing her hands over his. "The lunch rush hasn't even started."

"I missed my wife," Lucian said simply, turning her around in his arms so he could look down into her beautiful hazel eyes. "And I wanted to make sure my family was safe."

"We are always safe with you," Emma said softly, reaching up to adjust his silk tie.

Lucian looked at her—this extraordinary, fierce, plus-sized woman who had walked into his dark, silent life and filled it with color, warmth, and sound. She hadn't just saved his daughter's life that rainy night at one thirty-seven in the morning; she had saved his soul.

He reached down, taking her hand, his thumb stroking the diamond ring on her finger.

"I signed the papers today," Lucian whispered, a soft look in his eyes. "The Vance Foundation for Deaf Children is officially open. Sophie cut the ribbon."

Emma’s eyes filled with happy tears. She threw her arms around his neck, pulling his face down to hers. "You are an amazing man, Lucian."

"Only because I have an extraordinary queen," Lucian replied gently, before pressing his lips to hers in a slow, sweet kiss that tasted of sugar, home, and a future that would never know darkness again.

Outside, the rain began to fall softly against the window glass, but inside the bakery, surrounded by love, warmth, and the sweet language of the heart, they were finally complete.
