Chapter 2 - The Gilded Cage

Emma woke to the clinical, rhythmic beep of a heart monitor and the overwhelming scent of expensive white lilies.
She blinked, trying to clear the fog from her brain. The ceiling above her wasn't the cracked plaster of her tiny Brooklyn apartment, nor was it the drop-ceiling of a public hospital. It was detailed with exquisite crown molding. She lay in a king-sized bed wrapped in Egyptian cotton sheets, inside a room larger than her entire bakery.
She moved her arm, only to wince as a sharp bite of pain flared in her left shoulder.
"Do not move."
Emma turned her head slowly. Sitting in a high-backed leather chair near the window, a crystal glass of amber liquid in his hand, was Lucian Vance. He had shed his rain-soaked coat, wearing a crisp black shirt with the sleeves rolled up to reveal dark forearms mapped with old scars.
"Where... where am I?" Emma’s voice was raspy, her throat dry as sand.
"You are in my estate in Upstate New York," Lucian said, standing up and walking slowly toward the bed. He set his glass on the nightstand and poured a glass of water, straw included, holding it to her lips with an unnerving degree of care. "My personal surgeon removed the bullet three hours ago. It missed the main artery by less than two centimeters. You lost a significant amount of blood, Miss Brooks."
Emma took a few small sips, her cheeks flushing slightly at the proximity of the intimidating man. "Sophie... is she alright?"
A strange expression crossed Lucian’s sharp features—something akin to awe mixed with profound gratitude. "She is unharmed. Because of you." He leaned in closer, resting his hands on the edge of the mattress, trapping her in his intense gaze. "My daughter has not spoken a word, nor signed to a stranger, since her mother died three years ago. She lives in a world where everyone pities her, ignores her, or views her silence as a weakness. Yet, you sat with her. You spoke to her."
"It's just ASL," Emma murmured, trying to pull the blanket higher over her chest, suddenly very conscious of her size and the plain hospital gown she was wearing. "My younger brother was deaf. I grew up signing. It wasn't a big deal."
"It was a big deal to her. It was everything to me," Lucian corrected, his voice dropping an octave. "The men who fired those shots tonight belong to the Moretti syndicate. They knew my weakness was in that bakery. If you had not taken that bullet, I would be burying my child today."
Before Emma could respond, the oak door burst open. Sophie ran into the room, wearing oversized silk pajamas. The little girl didn't hesitate; she scrambled onto the edge of the bed, avoiding Emma’s injured side, and threw her arms around Emma’s waist, burying her face in the thick duvet.
Emma’s heart softened immediately. Raising her right hand, she signed softly against the girl’s back: I am okay. See? Strong like an ox.
Sophie looked up, wiping a tear from her cheek, and signed back: You stay here? Forever?

Emma froze, glancing up at Lucian. The mafia boss was watching her hand movements with absolute fascination, his jaw tight.
"You cannot return to your bakery, Miss Brooks," Lucian said quietly, answering the unspoken question. "The Morettis know who you are now. They know you saved my daughter. To them, you are a target. To me..." He paused, his eyes sweeping over her face, taking in the soft curve of her jaw, the determination in her hazel eyes, and the quiet strength she possessed. "To me, you are under my absolute protection. You live here now."
