Chapter 1 - The First Oath

The bell above the door chimed, a small, fragile sound that seemed instantly crushed beneath the heavy silence of sixteen armed men filing into the bakery. Rainwater dripped from the tailored shoulders of their wool coats, pooling on the polished linoleum floor alongside the scent of burnt espresso and sweet yeast. At the center of it all stood Lucian Vance. In New York, his name was not spoken aloud in polite company; it was whispered in boardrooms, feared in police precincts, and cursed in dark alleys. He was a man made of steel, shadows, and unbroken rules.

Yet, as he dropped to one knee on the flour-dusted floor, the terrifying aura surrounding him dissolved. He caught the small body of his seven-year-old daughter, Sophie, in an embrace so fierce his knuckles turned white through his leather gloves. For a moment, the don of the Five Families was just a desperate father holding his whole world.

Emma Brooks stood rigid near the display counter, her hands still trembling slightly beneath her apron. She was a woman used to being invisible—or at least, treated as part of the background. In a city obsessed with sharp angles and delicate silhouettes, her soft, curvy frame and practical flour-dusted clothes rarely drew a second glance. But right now, as Lucian raised his dark eyes from his daughter to the woman standing over them, Emma felt as though she were under a magnifying glass.

Sophie pulled back from her father’s chest, her fingers moving in rapid, fluid motions against his lapel.

She saved me, Papa. She speaks our language. She gave me chocolate that isn't mud.

Lucian’s dark brows furrowed. His eyes, a striking, stormy gray, locked onto Emma’s. The suspicion in his gaze was immediate and razor-sharp. In his world, coincidence was just another word for an ambush. How did a random late-night baker in Brooklyn know American Sign Language? Why was she sitting with the daughter of the city’s most guarded man?

"Who are you?" Lucian’s voice was a low, gravelly baritone that vibrated through the small room.

Before Emma could answer, the glass of the front display window shattered into a million glittering shards.

The sound of high-caliber rifle fire ripped through the night. The first bullet struck the metal coffee urn behind the counter, sending boiling liquid spraying across the walls. Lucian’s instincts were instantaneous. In a single motion, he shielded Sophie with his body, drawing a heavy silver pistol from beneath his jacket. His lieutenants moved into a defensive ring, weapons raised, returning fire into the rainy darkness outside.

Emma didn't think. She didn't calculate the risk, nor did she consider her own survival. All she saw was a red laser sight sweeping across the floor, tracking toward the exposed back of the young girl clinging to her father.

Emma lunged forward.

The impact was like a physical punch of heat. A high-velocity round meant for Sophie tore through the meaty flesh of Emma’s upper left shoulder instead. The force blew her off her feet, knocking her heavy frame onto the hard floor. Pain exploded behind her eyes, white-hot and blinding, consuming her sense of time and space.

Through the haze of shock, Emma heard the muffled roar of automatic gunfire, the sharp crunch of glass under boots, and the frantic, voiceless screams of a little girl. Hands slammed onto her wound—heavy, precise, and surprisingly gentle.

"Stay with me," a voice commanded directly beside her ear. Lucian’s face hovered over hers, his storm-gray eyes no longer cold, but wide with a terrifying intensity. "Hold the pressure!" he barked at his second-in-command, Victor, as he scooped Emma’s heavy body up into his arms as if she weighed nothing at all.

"Papa! Papa!" Sophie was pulling at his coat, signing frantically with one hand while tears streaked her pale cheeks. Don't let her die!

"She won't," Lucian declared, stepping over the shattered threshold out into the pouring rain, shielding both the bleeding baker and his crying daughter beneath his heavy coat. "On my life, she won't."
