Chapter 8 - Reclaiming My Mind and Body

Justice in the courtroom was crucial, but the true battle was taking place inside my own mind and heart.
The physical burns healed over time, leaving behind faint, silver scars across my skin. For months, I couldn't look in the mirror without feeling a sudden surge of memory—the heat, the smell, the sound of Luke’s empty voice in that kitchen.
I began working with a specialized trauma therapist named Dr. Rebecca Vance—the sister of Dr. Vance from the hospital.
"Scars aren't proof of what was broken, Caroline," Dr. Rebecca told me during one of our afternoon sessions in her garden office. "They are proof of what survived. They show that your body was strong enough to knit itself back together after someone tried to burn it away."
We worked through the deep psychological conditioning Luke had inflicted upon me. Layer by layer, we peeled away the toxic beliefs he had planted in my mind: that I was weak, that I was useless, that I was responsible for the loss of my babies.
One afternoon, Dr. Rebecca handed me a small, sealed box.
"Inside this box are copies of the medical reports from your four lost pregnancies," she said gently. "I want you to hold it."
I took the box, my hands trembling slightly.

"You spent years believing your body failed those children," Dr. Rebecca said softly. "I want you to look at those records not as evidence of loss, but as proof of love. Your body nurtured those babies perfectly. It was an outside evil that took them, not you. You were their protector, Caroline. You survived so you could tell their story."
I held the box against my chest, laying back against the cushions, and let tears flow freely—not tears of shame or weakness, but tears of deep, healing grief for the sons I had lost, and for the woman I was finally allowing myself to become.
