Chapter 3 - The Paper Trail

Over the next three days, my hospital room became the command center for the destruction of Luke’s life. While the burns on my skin began the slow, agonizing process of healing, Evelyn brought in a team of forensic accountants, criminal defense attorneys, and private investigators.
Luke was held without bail at the county jail, facing charges of aggravated assault, attempted murder, domestic violence, and corporate fraud. But Evelyn knew that a man like Luke—charismatic, wealthy on paper, and well-connected in local political circles—would fight with every dirty trick he had.
"He filed an emergency petition from jail this morning," Evelyn’s lead attorney, Sarah Jenkins, announced as she entered the room on Thursday afternoon. "His defense team is claiming that Caroline suffers from severe psychiatric delusions induced by post-traumatic stress and chemical imbalances from her lost pregnancies."
"They're trying to paint me as crazy," I said, sitting upright in bed, my voice growing stronger with every passing day.
"Standard play for a narcissist in a corner," Sarah replied. "They claim you knocked the boiling water onto yourself during a manic episode, and that any chemical traces found in your system were from unprescribed supplements you took secretly."
"We expected this," Evelyn said, sliding a laptop toward Sarah. "Show her what we found at the house yesterday."
Sarah opened a video file. It was body-cam footage from the search warrant executed at the mansion Luke and I had shared—a cold, modern house built on an isolated hill three miles outside the city.
The police forensic team had searched Luke’s private study, a room that had been locked with a biometric pad my entire marriage. Hidden behind a false panel in the built-in bookshelf was a small, temperature-controlled safe.
Inside the safe were dozens of glass vials labeled with chemical compounds, along with a detailed physical journal.
"He kept a log," Sarah said, her voice filled with disgust. "Every dose he gave you. Every date. The symptoms you displayed. How long it took for the pregnancy to fail. He was documenting his experiments on your body like a twisted lab project."
I watched the screen, tears of anger rising in my eyes. "He didn't just want the money. He enjoyed it. He enjoyed watching me suffer."

"This journal seals his criminal conviction," Evelyn stated firmly. "The attempted murder charge is now elevated to premeditated attempted murder and multiple counts of fetal homicide under state law. He is going away for the rest of his natural life."
"That’s the criminal side," Sarah added. "Now let's talk about the civil side. Caroline, it's time to take back everything he stole."
