Chapter 2 - Unearthing the Evidence

The police handcuffed Luke right beside my hospital bed. As they read him his Miranda rights, he glared at me with a hatred so intense it sent a shiver down my spine.
"You're nothing without me, Caroline!" he spat as he was dragged toward the door. "You hear me?! A broken, useless line of trash! You couldn't even keep a baby alive!"
"Take him out," the detective instructed, turning his attention to Dr. Vance and Evelyn.
Once the door clicked shut, the heavy silence of the room was broken only by the rhythmic beep of my heart monitor. My body was shaking uncontrollably from a mixture of shock, pain medication, and the sudden, overwhelming sensation of freedom.
"Caroline," Dr. Vance said gently, sitting on the stool beside my bed. "We need to talk about your medical history. What I told you earlier... it wasn't just a suspicion. We performed a full toxicology screen and reviewed the medical archives from the regional clinic where your previous miscarriages were recorded."
I looked at Dr. Vance, my breathing shallow. "What did you find?"
Evelyn set her briefcase on the bedside table and opened the manila folder. "Luke wasn't just abusing you physically before each pregnancy ended, Caroline. He was poisoning you."
My heart plummeted into my stomach. "Poisoning... me?"
"Synthetic progesterone blockers," Dr. Vance explained, pointing to a series of lab results in the file. "Administered in small, precise doses over several weeks. It simulates the natural drop in hormone levels that triggers a premature labor or miscarriage. It leaves almost no trace in standard blood panels unless a specific targeted screen is requested—which we did the moment you were admitted with deliberate contact burns."
The realization hit me like a physical blow. The special herbal teas Luke insisted on brewing for me every morning during my pregnancies. The "prenatal supplements" he personally ordered from an untraceable online vendor, claiming they were high-grade organic vitamins. He had been killing our unborn sons himself, while beating me and screaming that my body was broken, useless, and incapable of giving him an heir.
"Why?" I sobbed, covering my face with my bandaged hands. "Why would he do that?! He obsessed over having a son! He ruined my life because I couldn't give him one!"
"Because he never wanted a son, Caroline," Evelyn said quietly, her voice trembling with anger. "He wanted an excuse to keep you trapped, isolated, and feeling completely worthless. As long as you believed you were broken, you would never leave him. And as long as you stayed, he had complete control over your grandfather's forty-million-dollar estate."

I stared at my sister in absolute horror. The monstrous calculation of it was beyond anything I had ever imagined.
"He knew if you had a child, the estate trust would automatically unlock funds directly for the child's care, managed by an independent corporate trustee," Evelyn continued. "He couldn't touch that money. But as long as you remained childless, sick, and dependent on him, he could slowly drain your personal assets under the guise of paying for your medical treatments and private recovery."
