Chapter 6 - The Final Showdown in Court

The trial of The State v. Garrett Andrews began three months later. It was the most publicized trial the city had seen in years. The combination of high-society wealth, corporate fraud, domestic violence, and a dramatic downfall had captured the national media's attention.
Garrett sat at the defense table, wearing a plain gray suit provided by his public defense team—his high-priced defense attorneys had withdrawn after Garrett’s bank accounts were officially frozen under federal civil forfeiture laws. He looked gaunt, his former charm completely shattered, his eyes darting nervously around the courtroom.
Charlotte sat in the front row of the gallery, surrounded by her legal team, including Marcus Vance and a newly appointed co-counsel. She was calm, composed, and ready.
The prosecution’s star witness was Charlotte herself.
When her name was called, Charlotte walked up to the witness stand with quiet grace. She swore the oath, sat down, and looked directly at the jury.
over the course of three hours, the prosecutor walked Charlotte through every detail of her seven-year marriage. She presented medical records, forensic photography of her injuries, expert testimony from the trauma surgeons who had operated on her, and finally, the audio recordings and security camera footage from the night of the attack.
When the prosecutor played the security footage on the giant screens in the courtroom, several jurors gasped. The raw, violent reality of Garrett kicking Charlotte while she lay helpless on the floor echoed through the silent courtroom.
Garrett’s public defender attempted to cross-examine her, trying to paint Charlotte as a calculating spouse who had plotted the financial takeover of Garrett’s business long before the assault.
"Mrs. Andrews," the defense attorney asked, stepping toward the stand. "Isn't it true that as the compliance attorney for Andrews Development, you systematically structured the company's holdings in a way that gave you sole administrative control in the event of a marital dispute?"
Charlotte looked at the attorney with absolute clarity. "No, counselor. I structured the holdings in accordance with standard corporate compliance laws to protect the entity from illegal financial dissipation and criminal liability. The fact that my husband chose to commit both financial crimes and physical assault is why those protective clauses were activated."
"But you deliberately revoked the mortgage guarantee for your own parents the morning after the incident, correct?" the attorney pressed, trying to paint her as cold and vengeful. "Knowing it would destroy them financially?"
"I revoked my personal guarantee because my personal financial assets were no longer safe under the threats and actions of my abuser," Charlotte answered firmly. "And as an attorney, I am under no legal or moral obligation to financially support individuals who enable domestic violence."
The courtroom fell dead silent. The defense attorney closed his folder, knowing he had lost. "No further questions, Your Honor."
The jury deliberated for less than two hours.
When the verdict was read, the courtroom held its breath.
"On the charge of Aggravated Assault with Intent to Cause Great Bodily Harm: Guilty."
"On the charge of Corporate Fraud and Dissipation of Assets: Guilty."
"On the charge of Witness Intimidation: Guilty."
Garrett slumped in his chair, his head falling into his hands. The judge, a stern woman known for harsh sentences in violent crime cases, did not hesitate.
"Garrett Andrews," the judge stated, her voice echoing in the courtroom. "You used your status, your physical strength, and your wealth to inflict unspeakable cruelty upon your spouse, believing yourself to be above the law. This court sentences you to twelve years in state prison without the possibility of parole for the first eight years. Furthermore, a permanent, life-long protective order is issued in favor of Charlotte Andrews."

As the bailiffs stepped forward to cuff Garrett and lead him away in orange prison scrubs, Garrett turned his head toward Charlotte. For the first time, there was no anger in his eyes—only total, devastating defeat.
Charlotte did not look away. She watched him walk through the heavy metal doors of the holding cell, closing the chapter on seven years of torment.
