Chapter 10 - A Life Fully Claimed

Three years after the night that nearly claimed her life, Charlotte stood on the cliffside deck of her home, watching the sunset over the Pacific Ocean. The golden light bathed the coastline in warm, radiant colors.
Beside her stood Julian, holding two glasses of sparkling water. He wrapped an arm gently around her waist, and Charlotte leaned into him, feeling safe, loved, and whole.
Her parents were long gone from her thoughts, living out their quiet, subdued lives in public housing, learning the hard lesson that loyalty and love cannot be bought or exploited. Garrett was halfway through his prison sentence, forgotten by the business world he once sought to dominate.
Charlotte had claimed her own destiny.
She had transformed her pain into power, her scars into armor, and her legal brilliance into a shield for the defenseless. She was no longer Charlotte Andrews, the obedient, battered wife of a real estate developer. She was Charlotte Andrews, a titan of justice, a savior to hundreds of women, and the sole author of her own life.
Julian kissed her forehead gently. "What are you thinking about?" he asked softly.

Charlotte took a deep, full, painless breath, filling her lungs with the fresh ocean air.
"I'm thinking about how beautiful it feels," Charlotte smiled, looking out at the endless horizon, "to finally live my own choice."
