Chapter 2 - The Mask Slips

By 11:00 AM, the heavy oak doors of the hospital wing swung open. Garrett Andrews strode down the hallway, carrying a massive bouquet of white lilies—Charlotte’s least favorite flowers, though he had never bothered to learn that. He wore a tailor-made Tom Ford suit, his jaw squared, presenting the exact image of a devastated, devoted husband visiting his unfortunate wife.
He walked into the room, adjusting his expression into one of deep sorrow. "Charlotte, darling..."
He stopped dead in his tracks.
Sitting in the corner of the room was not a weeping, broken victim, but Marcus Vance, flanked by two uniformed police officers and Detective Miller from the domestic violence division.
Garrett’s eyes narrowed for a fraction of a second before his polished public persona kicked back in. "Marcus? What are you doing here? And officers... is there something wrong? I told the paramedics last night, my wife had a terrible fall down our marble staircase—"
"Save it, Garrett," Charlotte said from the bed. She sat upright, despite the excruciating tightness in her chest, wearing a simple button-down shirt over her bandages. Her eyes were clear, cold, and entirely devoid of fear.
"Darling, you're confused," Garrett said, taking a step toward her with an extended hand. "The medication the doctors gave you... you've had a traumatic head injury—"
"Mr. Andrews," Detective Miller interrupted, stepping between Garrett and the bed. "Mrs. Andrews has provided a full, recorded statement. We also have forensic photographs of the injury patterns on her ribs, back, and throat. The medical examiner confirmed that the injuries are entirely inconsistent with a fall down the stairs and consistent with severe physical assault."
Garrett’s face darkened. The charm evaporated, replaced by the sharp, cruel edge Charlotte had lived with for seven years. "This is absurd. My wife has a history of anxiety and emotional instability. Marcus, as my corporate legal consultant, I suggest you advise my wife against making false statements that could damage our family name."
"I am no longer your corporate consultant, Garrett," Marcus said calmly, holding up a legal document. "As of 8:00 AM today, I represent Charlotte personally. Furthermore, I have served a temporary restraining order issued by the Superior Court. You are required to step back six feet from Mrs. Andrews immediately, surrender your access cards to her personal assets, and vacate the primary residence by 5:00 PM today."
Garrett let out a cold, harsh laugh. He threw the bouquet of lilies into the trash can by the door. "Are you out of your mind, Charlotte? You think you can execute a legal ambush on me? You have nothing! Every asset, every property, every account is tied to Andrews Development!"
"No, Garrett," Charlotte said softly. "You owned the brand. I owned the infrastructure. While you were busy playing the wealthy developer at charity galas, I was the sole managing member of the holding corporations that held the deeds to your developments. You signed those structures seven years ago because your credit was ruined from your previous failed venture."
Garrett froze. Color drained slowly from his face as the reality began to sink in.
"You didn't read the fine print of the operating agreements, did you?" Charlotte continued, her voice slicing through the room like a scalpel. "Clause 14-B states that in the event of criminal indictment or gross financial dissipation by a secondary officer, the primary managing member retains absolute administrative control to freeze corporate accounts and remove officers."
"You... you set me up," Garrett stammered, his fists clenching tightly at his sides.
"You set yourself up the moment you raised your hand against me," Charlotte replied. "Detective Miller, Mr. Andrews is currently in violation of the temporary protective order by refusing to step back, and I wish to press full criminal charges for aggravated assault."
Detective Miller stepped forward, pulling a pair of handcuffs from his belt. "Garrett Andrews, you are under arrest for aggravated assault causing severe bodily harm. Hands behind your back."
"This is a mistake!" Garrett roared as the officers grabbed his arms and forced them behind his back. "Do you know who I am?! Charlotte, you worthless bitch! You'll rot without me! Your parents will throw you to the dogs! You have no one!"
Charlotte watched silently as the officers slammed Garrett against the wall, cuffed him, and dragged him yelling down the corridor. Hospital staff and patients stared as the prominent real estate mogul was led away in shame.
Marcus turned to Charlotte. "The arrest will hit the local business news within two hours. His bail hearing will be set for tomorrow morning, but we’ve already filed a motion citing him as a flight risk due to his offshore transfers."
"What about my parents?" Charlotte asked.
May you like
"They've been spamming my office phone," Marcus said, checking his mobile device. "They lost the Hidden Hills property thirty minutes ago. The seller pulled the contract, and the escrow company seized their deposit due to breach of financing terms. Your mother is currently outside your law firm’s building demanding to see you."
Charlotte closed her eyes briefly, taking a slow, cautious breath. "Let her wait. Let them both realize that the safety net they relied on for a decade was never guaranteed—it was earned through respect. And they forfeited it."
