Chapter 6 - Shadows at the Gala

Three weeks passed in a surreal haze of luxury and tension.
Elena’s life transformed overnight. She was given a breathtaking suite overlooking the estate’s rose gardens, filled with soft silk dresses, handmade leather shoes, and a nursery that looked as though it had been pulled straight from a fairy tale magazine. Dr. Harrison, a top obstetrician, visited every three days, declaring that both Elena and baby Lily were in perfect health.
Yet, Elena felt like a bird trapped in a cage made of diamonds.
Julian was everywhere and nowhere. He left the estate early every morning for business in the city, but every evening at precisely 7:00 PM, he sat across from her at the long mahogany dining table. He asked about her day, listened intently as she talked about her late husband, and watched her with an intense, quiet devotion that made her blood run hot.
Slowly, against her own will, Elena found her defenses crumbling. Beneath his ruthless exterior, Julian was fiercely protective, impossibly intelligent, and possessed a quiet tenderness that surfaced whenever he touched her belly to feel Lily kick.
On a rainy Thursday evening, the quiet routine shattered.
Julian walked into her suite, wearing a pristine white tuxedo jacket. His expression was grimmer than usual.
"Put this on," he said softly, handing her a long, flowing dark green velvet gown that draped beautifully over her heavy belly.
"Where are we going?" Elena asked, holding the luxurious fabric.
"Tonight is the annual Syndicate Gala at the Drake Hotel," Julian explained, watching her closely. "Every major family on the East Coast will be there—including Viktor Volkov. Word has leaked that I am keeping a woman at my estate. If I leave you here tonight, Volkov will take it as a sign of weakness and attack the grounds."
Elena felt a cold spike of fear. "And if I go with you?"
Julian stepped close, reaching out to zip up the back of her dress as she slipped into it, his warm fingers brushing against her spine, sending shivers down her neck.
"If you go with me," Julian whispered near her ear, "you stand at my side as my Donna. And no man in this city will dare touch you."
Two hours later, the grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel was a sea of glittering crystal chandeliers, black ties, and hidden weapons. High society mixed with the criminal underworld in a tense, dangerous dance of power.
When the heavy oak doors swung open, the room went dead silent.
Julian Rossi walked in, his arm wrapped firmly around Elena’s waist, supporting her weight with proud authority. Elena looked radiant—her dark green gown highlighting her glowing skin, her dark hair pinned back with diamonds, her hand holding Julian’s black-clad arm.
Whispers erupted through the room like wildfire.
"Is that the girl from the West Side?" "Look how he holds her... he’s possessed by her!" "She's carrying a widow's child, yet Rossi looks at her like she's a queen!"
Julian ignored the whispers, guiding Elena toward the VIP balcony. But as they crossed the center of the dance floor, a tall, gaunt man with ice-blue eyes and a scar running through his eyebrow stepped directly into their path.
Viktor Volkov.
"Julian," Viktor sneered, holding a glass of scotch. His eyes drifted down to Elena, lingering on her belly with a sickening grin. "So this is the little charity case you've been hiding. Tell me, my dear... does he touch you with the same hands he used to break your landlord's ribs?"
Elena felt Julian’s muscles turn to solid iron beside her. His hand on her waist tightened, his hazel eyes flashing with a murderous light that made the air around them feel thin.
Before Julian could move, Elena took a small step forward, her chin lifted high, her brown eyes blazing with cold courage.
"Mr. Volkov," Elena said, her voice echoing clearly over the hushed crowd. "Julian Rossi took me out of the cold. You sent men to burn my house down. I know which man is the beast... and it isn't the one standing beside me."
The ballroom gasped. Viktor’s smile vanished, his face twisting in sudden rage.

Julian looked down at Elena, a look of profound, breathtaking awe washing over his features. A slow, lethal smile spread across his lips as he stepped in front of her, facing Volkov.
"You heard the lady, Viktor," Julian whispered softly. "Now get out of my sight before I paint this dance floor with your blood."
